sleeping arrangements for kids?

sjr79

I have a two and a half year old boy and a one year old girl the one year old has been sleeping in her crib in our bedroom since she was born but we know she needs to get out and shes is crawling out of her crib. we only have one small bedroom besides ours upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs. whats a good way to get our girl out of our bedroom, they seem to young for bunk beds or to move my son to the basement.

Answer
Let your son and daughter share the upstairs bedroom, near you, for the time being. I would definitely not do bunkbeds yet, nor move them to the basement.

Make the bedroom that they share upstairs for sleeping only, and convert one of the downstairs rooms into a playroom. Thus, when they are upstairs at night or at nap time during the day, they are sleeping and then they are downstairs they are playing.

When they get a bit older, you can move them each to their own room. My oldest two (a girl and a boy) shared a room until they were 9 and 7. There is nothing wrong with such. In fact, I think it helped them bond.

Also, they make crib tents that might help you. It is a mesh dome that fits over the crib, so the child can not crawl out and get injured.

I hope this helps!

Parents: children bedroom decor question...?

Jax's Momm

At what age did you get your child a night stand? My son is 2 and does not have one.

Also, do you have 1 night stand or 2? I have been looking on Craig's List and at estate sales for a set for myself and I am amazed at how most are selling only 1! Do I need to buy new to find a matching set, or is the new thing to only have 1?

Thanks!

Answer
Okay, so when I just had my twins, they had a bunk bed with a tent castle thing under it instead of a bed, so Rosalie(who slept on the bunk bed) didn't have one. She was four. Allyson, Rosalie's twin sister, slept on a twin beside her. She did, but she is more of the book reading girl. Now they are 8 and they both have twin beds with night stand, which they have had since they were four, when the quads were born. The boy quads, have a bunk bed, have one bedside table, on the bottom. On the top, there is a shelf. They have had since they were three. My quad girls both have nightstands on there beds. My kids use one nightstand for their rooms, because they don't need two, and then you can push the bed up against the wall and have more room for them to run around.

A rainy weekend with 2 kids?

AprilSS

I need some ideas on what to do with my 7 year old daughter and my 4 year old stepson this weekend. It's supposed to be storming all weekend and they will be bored and driving us nuts if we don't get them out of the house and do something fun.

We don't have lots of money and it's hard to find stuff that they're both interested in. Any ideas?
Oh, and I live in the St. Louis area

Answer
Libraries can be fun for the right kids - my older two could spend hours there.

Check the local paper - many high schools do performances this time of year and the cost is usually just a few dollars.

Go to the mall to just walk around or have a snack.

Visit a local pet center like PetsMart - my kids love the fish tanks there!

Have a lunch picnic on the floor of a living room, bedroom or somewhere they don't usually eat. Spread out a blanket, pack the lunch, the works.

Make a tent by draping blankets over the dining or kitchen table. Let them use their imagination.

Get some empty boxes, all sizes and let them decorate and use them any way they wish. My kids will ask us to cut doors in them to make 'cars' for their stuffed animals or if they are big, for themselves!

Make a scavenger hunt in the house with prizes.

Bake cookies (always a hit)

Sleeping with a kid with autism?

So basically I am going camping with some friends, my mom made me sleep with all the other guys, we're all 14, and no, none if us are gay, one of them has autism, let's just call him Jerry, my mom is pretty much best friends with his mom, I have no idea how he does it but he sounds and imitate spongebob asleep all night!!! I can't sleep like this! I've argued with my mom and she still doesn't care, last time I went camping and he was there, in our tent, during the night he threw his pillow at me all spongebob giggly, an then I tossed it back to him and accidentally hit his face, he started crying so loud and left the tent waking up the entire campsite... In the morning he kept imitating cats... Over and over!! What do I do when he starts acting up like this? I can't handle this anymore, sometimes he acts drunk and walks around all drunk falling into people...

Answer
Welcome to my world. I share a bedroom with my brothers and 3 have autism spectrum disorder.
Tell him no spongebob noe but if he stops with spongebob you will play spongebob with him later ( and you have to do it). When he imitates cats tell him not now and if he wants to be a cat then a little later.
Use his obsession with spongebob and cats to your advantage. One of my brothers is obsessed with serial killers. We got him to stop talking about it by giving him time to do so, and then no more. You could do the same thing.

activities for kids...?

Chrissy

Hi Ya'll,
I babysit 3 girls ages 1, 3 and 5. Mainly it's the 3 & 5 year old for an 8 hour period and then the 1 yr old for 4 hours. They are really active (always going going going!) and I was trying to think of some activites for them to do while inside? Being outside is fine but there parents don't want them out for an excessive amount of time due to heat/sun so when they are inside I need something amusing to do for at least an hour or two at a time. Anyways, they usually don't sit still for movies very long but I did just buy playdoh, a coloring book, chalk (sidewalk), and a playdoh activity kit which I hope will keep them amused. Any other ideas...?

Thanks!!
~Sarah

PS The girls do have there own toys to play with, but they usually get bored within 10 min. (just aren't "cool" anymore) so please dont suggest that. It never works! haha. :o)

Answer
I love children.. I highly sujest getting a babysitting bag together. Most children are not interested in their toys because no one has really sat down with them and show them how to play with the toys.. Get your self on a schedule play time with them. Since you are the one person that is around them the most a schedule is the best. And they really respond to order..
Children at this age Love Love 3 and 5
Story Time (make different voices to fit characters)
Puppet Time
Dress Up
Make a tent out of the kitchen table or in living room..Or in the bedroom..
The five year old should really be into playing mommy and the three year old is just starting in this area. So playing house. Which leads to play time in the world of imagination..
Pretend Cooking, Baby care, cleaning, Rest rant, This activity will and can go on for hours and they like to play it almost daily.
Playdoh is a great activity I agree make sure to cover the floor if it is on carpet..Be ready to have the colors mixed. The three year old will love to mix the colors and the older one will want them kept separate. So maybe their very own play doe for play doe time. Stinging big beads on a shoe lace../Ball time play..each needs own ball and also together time. rolling it on the ground.learning to catch.. the five year old should like tossing the ball up in the air..
Five Year Olds:
Teach sack-walking and "twist-em," "statue," or "freeze" games to provide an outlet for their drive for physical activity.
Play games that can teach right and left directions, like "Hokey-Pokey," "Looby-Loo," and "Simon Says."
Ask 5-year-olds to tell you a story. Write it down and post it on the wall or refrigerator
Three Year Old
Play musical games such as "London Bridge," "Ring-around-the-Rosie," and "Farmer in the Dell. Also they love to jump and hop.. show them "how to hop like a rabbit, tiptoe like a bird, waddle like a duck, slither like a snake, and run like a deer.Box play and anything they can hide in.. Making silly faces..
One year old..
will love play doe too.. All will love bubbles..ball play too..called "Roll it to me"

Have Fun.. Hope this helps. ^^

how do I setup a play area for my 3 year old son in a 1 bedroom apartment?

I have moved from a single family home to a 1 bedroom apartment. My son used to have his own toy room. Now the only place I have for him is the dining area. We dont use a dining table so we decided to use that area as his toy / play area. Any ideas on how I can organize that area so that I can make it his play area ?

Answer
Ikea has great kids organizational tubs and shelving. Not expensive, and a good way to keep order. A cheapy solution is to buy a collasable kids tent for him to play in.

What color or exactly to decorate my kids bedroom?

kids tent bedroom on NE-Kids-Woodland-Natural-Junior-Loft-Tent-Bed-with-Firehouse-Tent.jpg
kids tent bedroom image

Proud mom

I am moving to a house and will needed painted. I wanted to paint and decorate my kids room. Both of them are boys. Three and a five year old. They both will be sleeping in the same room together. I am trying to figure out want to do for them to be happy in our new place and they like cars and balls. I really want it to be special.

Answer
Do you have a bed? If not-here is a link for a loft bed w/a tent. Its so cute. Too bad its not a bunk bed, though. Then you could get the sports bean bags, basketball clothes hamper.. etc

sports bed:
http://www.roomville.com/products/productDetail.asp?PROD_ID=357&DEPid=0&ROOT_dept=0

sports bean bag chairs:
http://www.target.com/gp/search.html/601-6331324-2538546?field-keywords=basketball%20bean%20bag%20chair&afid=yahoosspslp&lnm=basketball%20bean%20bag%20chair&ref=tgt_adv_XSJH1060

I wish my 4 year old wanted sports, I have found many more ideas and things to go with sports. but he wants monster trucks! I may get a tire and dip it in brown paint and make muddy tire tracks over his blue walls. Then hang posters up and maybe even get a wall murial. Also hang or paint road signs. if you do a search on wall murials and/or road signs you will find lots of ideas. the murials are really too expensive for me so I may try to do it myself! (MAYBE) they also have the wall "stick ups" for sports or cars. they are removable stickers. do a search if your interested.
anyway. good luck and have fun!

How can I design a camping themed room for my 10 year old?

Q. My son loves the outdoors. He wants his room to be a camping theme. In other words, he wants a tent to sleep in, things with boats, fishing, etc. I would love for him to have a tent to sleep in, but I also want to put his mattress in the tent so he won't have to sleep on the floor!! Is this doable? How big of a tent would I have to get? Can you even put a tent up in your house without having to stake it down?
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks!

Answer
there are many toy tents available these days for kids in the market made of parachute material that are long lasting and i guess they are big enough to accomodate a mattress, if not, even if the mattress peaks out a little, it is no problem, you can rope in the tent higher and it will give a spread over effect, these tents are meant for small children only and can be placed in the rooms!

along with it, you can go to a supermarket and check out the fishing section, there you will find wooden boats decorated in corners, you can buy one of these and place it in one corner of the room, it will give the out door effect, you can also get a artifical tree to place in one corner of the room, it will all enhance the outdoor effect, apart from that, try to paint the room in light green and light brown c

along with it, you can go to a supermarket and check out the fishing section, there you will find wooden boats decorated in corners, you can buy one of these and place it in one corner of the room, it will give the out door effect, you can also get a artifical tree to place in one corner of the room, it will all enhance the outdoor effect, apart from that, try to paint the room in light green and light brown combination or even sky blue color to foster the image of being outdoors

Is it bad to keep an air mattress constantly inflated?

Lauren CA

We have big air mattress that we use in our spare bedroom (we're still broke post-college kids). Is it bad for the bed to keep it always inflated like a permanent bed? Does it wear it out or stretch it out? Should we deflate it when we're not using it?

Answer
It doesn't hurt it a bit.Eventually it will start leaking from age,as plastic gets brittle and cracks. We've used one when visiting my parents; with three kids for years, as they have a small house. We've still got the Coleman ones we've used for camping since 2000.The first time we used them,Ohio was in a flash flood watch and I told my wife we could use them like boats as the tent got rained on.She didn't believe me,and stayed up all night after the rain stopped.Try goodwill and Salvation Army stores for used furniture. They have couches for $100-200 dollars, including sofa beds.Be very picky as it is sold "AS IS".

What color or exactly to decorate my kids bedroom?

(MAYBE) they also have the wall "stick ups" for sports or cars. they are removable stickers. do a search if your interested.
anyway. good luck and have fun!

how do I setup a play area for my 3 year old son in a 1 bedroom apartment?

sc2008

I have moved from a single family home to a 1 bedroom apartment. My son used to have his own toy room. Now the only place I have for him is the dining area. We dont use a dining table so we decided to use that area as his toy / play area. Any ideas on how I can organize that area so that I can make it his play area ?

Answer
Ikea has great kids organizational tubs and shelving. Not expensive, and a good way to keep order. A cheapy solution is to buy a collasable kids tent for him to play in.

I'm ideally looking for a specific company that can supply kids bedroom furniture as IKEA and HABITAT etc don't fit the strange angles. I could get bespoke cupboards and drawers etc, but that would be so expensive. Just some links would be great...

I am living in cal. right now in a 2 bedroom apartment in the not so nice neighborhood where kids run the streets day and night & since two of my sons are in school now w/ a lot of these kids, harder n harder to keep them away fr. the street/ kids. already have a place to live when we get there. my hubby out of work right now, but he is an elect. do work is there- but the longer we stay here the more $$ we will spend- rent groceries, day to day, but can we afford to drive with us 5 in our 1992 honda accord from bay area to northwest wyoming? Are there tips to save when driving long trips?ideas for cutting costs- ways to make my $ multiply? I need to hurry I am losing precious time w/ my grandma, and i feel so anxious all the time?

Answer
Im sorry for your Faimly.
If it was me I would sell everything and leave the area. I would spen the last bit of time with my grand mother. I have lost mine and she lived accross the country from me.
When your ready to leave make food for days before hand for example cook Meals store them in Eskies as your driving use them for your meals. Make sand wiches, Cordial or better still have plewnty of water. if you need to spend the night any where use a Tent. The kids will enjoy it as a adventure. I have a 6 yr old daughter. Make up stories and Get them to pack a Back pack each filled with their toys, books stuff. Pack pillows in the car. Then when all this is done just say good bye and go for it.
Good Luck.

I am homeless and I don't know where else to turn for help, any ideas?

I am a single mother of two wonderful boys ages 12 & 4. We were evicted after I lost my income this passed year. I was a crying mess when my boys and I checked into a shelter here in town. My Dr decided to add to my anti-depressant that I was on by giving me Abilify. She said it would have some side effects but to give it time for my system to adjust. Well after explaining to the Women in charge of the homeless shelter the reason I felt woozy or seemed extremely tired was due to the newness of this medication, she didn't believe a word I said and kicked my boys and I out into a wintery blizzard day this passed February. We had been there for three nights! Not only did she kick us to the curb she called Child Protective Services to find out where we went to and rescue my children from a strung out mother who they assumed was doing crack or meth or cocaine! Of course a lady named Em from CPS found us staying with my mother in her very small one bedroom apartment the next day or so. I told her what had happened but also what was really going on. She offered me a chance to do a drug screening to help prove that I in fact don't do drugs. I was happy to so rite there we did a drug test and waited about 2 weeks until the results came back from a lab. Of course Negative just as I knew it would. However after staying with my mom has been challenging due to my sons allergies and my other son being allergic to flea bites. This has all just got worse now that 2 of my moms 5 cats had kittens! Each mom cat had 6 kittens bringing the total up to 17 of them! My oldest son can barely breath when he wakes up in the morning, & my youngest had flea bites on his face, back, stomach, legs & everywhere! Each flea bite swells up to a big red lump or welt that takes up to a week to stat to fade. He can't handle it no one should have to! I was just told by CPS that my solution of sleeping in a tent with my kids needs to come to an end now. Due to the cold weather. And I agree totally. But we have no where to go. The pullout couch in my moms little place that we had been on is now covered in fleas! To bomb the fleas is pointless seen as she lets her cats in and out of the house whenever and with the air quality even worse from kitten pee and poo the smell is to me border line toxic! I can not subject my kids to that! I have called shelters from Traverse City, Ludington, Cadillac & Manistee, they are all full. If someone would or could help us get on our feet and into a place of our own I will not stop until I find us a home. I am currently waiting on a judgement from court about how much child support we should be receiving or if they are gong to make my boys dad pay any of the 18 grand in back child support that he owes. But that is a whole other can of worms I'll open on a different question. As for my question, Is there any help out there that I'm not aware of or haven't already tried yet? I'll try about anything so please send me any suggestions or phone numbers of anyone who can help us find a home. Also I don't even know if anyone will ever read this but if you have, thank you for your time & My life is a mess but I just need someone out there to help me and give me a chance to raise my sons to be strong and respectful with roots from a stable and secure home. Thank you, Sara Cross - Mother of Two

Weird responders so far. One seems sane, one is a religiously oriented slightly zealotous person, and one is just a jerk who is a waste of space and planet resources. Pity the last. He's brain damaged.

Now, there's no way to try to put a positive spin on your situation. That said, most cities have multiple churches that have resources allocated for people in emergency situations like yours. If you have telephone availability, that's one of the first things I'd check. Some emergency service groups are desperate to serve people but also desperate for people to help serve. That can be a 'barter' sort of arrangement that will get you off the streets or filthy digs at least till something else turns up. I assume you've reached out to relatives both near and distant? I also assume that the father of the children is not available for child support, even if it's enforced temporary remuneration for what had been unpaid to date...perhaps a lein on his paycheck? That's a legal issue and would need a lawyer to address, but there are legal aid societies that give free legal assistance.

I pray something has helped you here. If not, then please just accept my prayers.

What low-cost, low energy things can I do with my kids this summer?

it's just

I'm tight on cash, struggle with depression and have injuries in both feet. So summer camps are out, things that take a lot of energy to plan won't happen and I can't play physically with them until I heal. I want them to still have fun though. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

They are girls, ages 10 and 5.

Answer
Why don't you put up a tent in the living room! or get the girls to decorate a bedroom as tho it was a tent! i love that idea! im going to do that with my 7 year old daughter. Have lots of pillows, sleeping bags.. you all sleep in there! it's mad! Play games! make some home made pizzas (just use english muffins as the base) Get the girls to put on their Fav. toppings. Tell them stories. I think it's a great way to have fun and not pay much at all!
