Tent camping with an 8 month old?

Has anyone been tent camping with a young baby? Any tips? Is it a bad idea?

When our kids were little we took them tent camping many times. We camped in Yosemite, Devils Post Pile and even Borrego Desert Sites. We kept a play pen in the tent with us. When they would wake up at night the wife would get them out nurse them , burp them and put them back to sleep. Those were the days of cloth diapers too. Most of out camp sites had a laundry close by. Our oldest now almost 48 started camping at 6 months, as did our 46 and 44 year old. Our youngest now 38 was a bottle baby, saw 4 month old on her first camping trip. We kept the bottles in our sleeping bag to keep them warm. One night the temp was 21 and I rolled over and found a very coolish bottle in my back. Now that is one way to wake up with a start. camping never was a problem with us. take plenty of diapers, try to keep them on a normal schedule as much as possible. Have fun, take them often. My kids now take their kids camping and some times they will use the tents. Grand parents are great when camping out too, extra child care and most will help with the cooking and dish washing . But we do have problems with sleeping on the grouond. lol

We used to go to the beach when our kids were babies. We'd take their porta-crib (pack-n-play) and use a large beach umbrella to keep them in the shade. I am grandma now and I bought a pack-n-play that came with a cover - very nice for the beach and camping, too. I've seen some beach tents at Target so I imagine most of those types of stores like K-Mart or Wal-Mart would probably have them, too. Also, try a sporting goods store. We have Dunham's in our area and they carry that type of thing, too. I have also seen them on eBay. You want to only get the kind of tent that is specifically designed for the beach as the type of tent that you would use for camping, such as a small dome tent is not made out of the right material and does not have the right ventilation for the beach. Having been a tenting family for years, camping tents are incredibly hot inside when the sun is shining on them. You don't want to use this type of tent at the beach - your baby will overheat in it.

What are some ideas of things to do at nine year old girl's birthday party?

My sister turned nine during the summer and is having her party this week. It was supposed to be a pool party, but because it's so cold out side, there will probably not be much swimming, although we would like to keep it outside. It is 2 hours long, though, and we need ideas to keep all the girls (15) together and excited and having fun. We need ideas from crafts and games. Already, we are doing sparklers and marshmallow roasting, and other ideas like those that can be done in the dark/late afternoon would be great!!

Have your guest bring sleeping bags, flashlights, pajamas, fuzzy slippers, etc.

1. Tie a balloon with string around your guest's ankles. On "go" everyone tries to stomp on everyone else's balloon.

2. Give all guests a toothpick to put in between their teeth. They form a line and try to pass a lifesaver or any candy with a hole in it to everyone with using only your toothpick.

3. Put truth and dare cards in a balloon and have guests pick a balloon pop it and answer the truth or do the dare.

4. Play hide and go seek at night

5. Have a silly string war

6. Put a cookie on your forehead and get it to your mouth by using facial expressions only

7. Have one girl be the pointer. She points at one girl to start off a random story then she points to another girl to continue it, and so on

8. Have a girl leave the room while everyone hides in their sleeping bags. The girl comes in and feels the bodies to guess who it is.

9. Have an equal pile of m&ms for every girl. One teen starts off by saying I have never... (I have never gone to Hawaii) If it is true for you, eat an m&m. Whoever has the most left wins!

10. Have a bowl of small multicolored candy (like skittles) Have everyone grab 2 candies. If they have the same color you get to eat them. If not you must keep this in your mouth. Round after round you stuff sweets into your mouth until you have 2 of the same color.

11. Play a classic game of truth or dare

12. Watch a movie.

13. Freeze dance

14. Put on mosquito spray if your going to be outside! Mosquito bites suck!

15. Play "Do You Like Your neighbor?".

16. Play hide and go seek in the dark!

Go to different rooms and create a skit which includes all items in the bag. After 15 minutes come back and perform. Variation: Create a song or commercial.

Is it a good idea to go to Oktoberfest with our 2 year-old son?

We want to eat some good food, have one beer and take our son on some carnival rides. I heard that the Augustiner tent is more familiy-oriented and that there are family days where rides are discounted.

Answer
I would not take a kid younger than 5 years old to the Oktoberfest.
But that is my personal opinion.

EDIT most of the fun rides do have an minimum age required which in 90 % of cases is older than 2 years!!!

What to do for 6th year anniversary with pregnant wife and kid?

I wanted to know if someone can help me out in coming up with an anniversary idea for my wife and 4 year old son. She is also pregnant which might make it a bit of a challenge. I live in Tustin, Ca and I was thinking of possibly going away for the day, but where. Does not have to be an outing for the day either.

Go for a picnic somewhere, have a camp fire and set up a tent in the backyard. Go to the beach and then a movie and then once your kid is asleep, set something romantic up for your wife like a big bubble bath with candles and your guys favorite music, and have a glass of wine, one glass won't hurt the baby whatsoever.

How can I creatively decorate my kids rooms without painting?

1. Cover wall space with your child's own original artwork.
2. For young children, use crepe paper on a roll (available at teacher's supply or craft shops) for finger, sponge, or other tactile painting. You can lay the paper flat, let your child paint to her/his heart's content, and then hang the finished painting from your child's wall. Another method is to hang blank sheets from ceiling to floor like wallpaper and let your child 'body paint' right onto the wall. This can be a fun activity for the whole family, as long as you don't mind getting a little messy yourself. Make handprints, footprints, and splatters. It's like coloring the walls, but without the parental wrath and permanent damage.
3. Older children may already have a collection of artwork from school art classes. Turn your child's room into a mini-museum by framing your child's drawings and paintings with paper, pegboard, or wooden frames, and hanging them throughout the room.
4. Finally, pre-teens will enjoy the time-honored tradition of the magazine collage. Use a removable, non-damaging adhesive (such as Sticky Tack) to arrange clipped pictures of movie stars, favorite musicians, and coveted shoes all over the walls. The best part of this decorating technique is that your child can add to it every day.
5. Liven up white walls.
6. If your child's heart is set on changing the color of the walls entirely, try using wallpaper - without actually pasting it up. Take a trip to the home goods store and pick out paper samples or remnants. Don't worry if the remnants aren't large enough to cover the whole wall - creating a collage of different patterns and colors is part of the fun.
7. To add texture, choose some fabric remnants from a crafts store to hang as tapestries. If your child sleeps in a bunk bed, fabrics can be hung from the sideboards to create a "tent". This can make the room feel bigger, and creates a great place for pretend!
8. Add 3-dimensional interest.
9. Hanging mobiles aren't just for babies. Fill some space in the room by fashioning a "chandelier" out of old toys, stuffed animals, or any lightweight objects. Older children might enjoy making mobiles that reflect their hobbies. Baseball cards, old ballet slippers, and sports ribbons are all good materials.
10. Hanging fabric from the walls - attached only at the top with some neat finishing nails - adds a splash of color to a room, and you can always take it down. Also try hanging picture frames (with nails through the fabric) on top of the fabric sheet to have a nice picture collage.
11. Add decorative knobs to the furniture. Thousands are available now, you'll find one that will relate to something important in your child's life - their favorite sport, an animal they love... You can even get them really involved by letting them paint their own knobs!
12. Self-stick, peelable, wallpaper borders, murals, and designs. They do not damage the walls, yet add a lot of color and character. Has your son out-grown ABC's and cartoon cars? Peel them off, wash the walls, stick on the Batman borders and stickers. They are available at many places that sell wallpaper as well as on-line. They will last for a year at least. Actually, these self-stick borders are nice for adding an easy splash of color to any room. Some of these products are 'cheap-looking' (like shelf paper), but many are indistinguishable from quality wallpaper.
13. Remember to hang art and other decorations low enough for the child to appreciate... and yes, touch. Too many nicely-decorated children's rooms have the pictures, shelves, etc. all at adult height. Who cares if it looks like it came out of a magazine? Whose room is it anyway? Put that ABC poster down at toddler level so she can appreciate it.

Also hang or paint road signs. if you do a search on wall murials and/or road signs you will find lots of ideas. the murials are really too expensive for me so I may try to do it myself! (MAYBE) they also have the wall "stick ups" for sports or cars. they are removable stickers. do a search if your interested.

What are some fun games for kids while camping?

My husband and I are planing a camping trip with or kids but we can't think of games to play. We have 4 boys ages 6, 5, 3, and 2.We were looking for some games for then to play to help to keep them from getting bored. Help please.

How about a scavenger hunt for specific leaves, bark, etc from plants around your area. You could get a book of what is prevalent in the area where you will be camping and have each child find specific items. With different lists, you could customize each one to the child's age. For instance, with a picture, the 5&6 year old might be able to find an oak leaf. the younger ones might just have to find a green leaf.

My dad taught me to recognize what trees, bark, berries, etc. went with each kind of tree in the area where I grew up with this sort of game. I still remember how fun it was.

They might enjoy having sand shovels, etc. for dirt digging too. Some guys that age like to dig for imaginary dinosaurs.

Mostly, just have fun discovering tracks, flowers, berries, etc. and exploring the great outdoors. Kids love to help gather stuff to build a fire if you let them put the twigs in before you light the fire.

In fact, your older boys might enjoy helping to make a hobo stove to cook on while camping. I've put a link below to show you how. You could help them make it before you leave (only takes about 15 mintues) and they could gather twigs to cook hot dogs (or whatever) over it in camp. (charcoal for a backup is a good idea in case all the twigs are soaking wet.

Your oldest boy (your husband) might enjoy making the alcohol stove. I'll leave a link for it too.

Also, just in case of bad weather, be sure to take card games like go fish for tent playing.
