What should i bring to work at a BSA Scout Camp for two months?

Seth Parki

I am going to be working at Camp Hunt by Bear Lake for two months. What should I bring? A list would be nice or a link to a website that has a list. Thanks.

Answer
I would think that the camp director(s) that hired you could tell you exactly what you need. You might give them/him a call and just ask... Different camps may well require you to have different personal articles, depending how they are set up and how they are furnished.

When I was involved with the Boy Scouts (altho I admit that was a long time ago) at Summer Scout Camp the Scouts "lived/stayed" in large cabin tents. Each Scout Troop (and it's Scoutmaster) was assigned to a specific, and separated, "camp-area". And each camp had a name...Camp Cowskin...Camp Blackjack...Camp Arrowhead...Camp Lookout, etc. etc... But the Scouts were only there 5 or 6 days, before heading back home... The camp councilors and staff, and people working there lived/stayed in an area with cabins, inside toilets, a cafeteria, etc., much like a small house. But, they were there most all summer... (And of course this was in Oklahoma. Things may be different elsewhere.)............... So, you may want to call and find out before forgetting something you need, or carting out alot of stuff you don't need.

How can I make camping fun?

amber

My boyfriend has never been camping, but I have and I love it. This summer I'm taking him up to one of the nicest camping spots around where we live. We're car camping so we can take whatever we want since we have a large truck. The campground is at an ocean side, so no swimming (much too cold). It has bathrooms and showers so he'll be a bit more comfortable. I also have an air mattress we can bring so he doesn't have to sleep on the ground. How else can I make it more comfortable an most importantly fun for him? He's kind of an indoor person, and he's never been exposed to outdoor activities. My dad was a single parent so whenever he was actually around camping, fishing, and any other outdoor sport was petty much all we did together. Help me out please :)

Answer
If I was your boyfriend I think I'd be more than happy to spend time alone with the girl I loved in a scenic location. But if your boyfriend isn't an outdoors person he might be put-off by the lack of convenience and entertainment options.

The first thing I'd worry about is helping your boyfriend pick the clothing and gear he's going to bring so he is warm and comfortable throughout the trip. Make sure to bring extra blankets. Many people have trouble sleeping the first few times camping because they're not used to the sounds of nature, so ear plugs are a good idea.

Next I'd focus on is creating a campground environment that is comfy and safe. Have a lantern that can run overnight on low setting so he won't be concerned about getting lost if he has to go to the bathroom during the night. A table and chairs to relax outside, protected by a tarp and bug candles or a screen room so you both can relax outside and enjoy the view without risk of rain or insect bites. Remember it will be windy near the beach so make sure your tent, tarp and/or screen room are well-secured. Have your meals planned out and involve him in preparation so he gets to experience cooking outdoors. A nice campfire to snuggle in front of as you watch for shooting stars and tell each other stories. Maybe some wine or beer to help him relax, but not enough to get drunk.

Pack a picnic basket and blanket and go out on a hike, stopping along the way to point-out and explain the wildlife, nature and scenery. Just holding hands and walking the beach looking for seashells is a good time if you're with someone you enjoy. Maybe do some surf fishing or crabbing, or go out on a dolphin/whale watching boat trip, but be prepared in case he gets seasick. If there's someplace nearby where you can hire horses or mountain bikes for a short ride that's always a good time. Many beach areas also have tethered hot air balloon rides, or go to a nearby small airport and take a discovery flight in a small plane. Bring a camera and a tripod so you can take pictures of the both of you as a couple enjoying the sights.

Depending on where you are you might buy some fireworks and put on your own little show on the beach, making sure to keep it safe and clean-up afterwards. Some beaches have ATV or motorcycle rentals so you can ride on the beach. A nearby amusement pier would be fun. Or racing remote controlled cars on the beach.

But mostly I say just be yourself and do the things you like to do. He will either like it or he won't. If he doesn't then you need to decide whether a relationship can work with a person who doesn't share your interests. Sometimes they do, but mostly they don't.

Neisy

I am looking for realistic, fun, creative and unique ways of keeping ones self occupied. Just for future references.
So I am looking for great ideas from everyone.
Also, ahead of time...
Thank you for your Ideas.

Answer
1. Take shopping carts for the express purpose of filling them
and stranding them at strategic locations.

2. Ride those little electronic cars at the front of the store.

3. Set all the alarm clocks to go off at ten minute intervals
throughout the day.

4. Start playing Calvinball; see how many people you can get
to join in.

5. Contaminate the entire auto department by sampling all the
spray air fresheners.

6. Challenge other customers to duels with tubes of gift wrap.

7. Leave cryptic messages on the typewriters.

8. Re-dress the mannequins as you see fit.

9. When there are people behind you, walk REALLY SLOW,
especially thin narrow aisles.

10. Walk up to an employee and tell him in an official tone, "I
think we've got a Code 3 in Housewares," and see what
happens.

11. Tune all the radios to a polka station; then turn them all off
and turn the volumes to "10".

12. Play with the automatic doors.

13. Walk up to complete strangers and say, "Hi! I haven't seen
you in so long!..." etc. See if they play along to avoid
embarrassment.

14. While walking through the clothing department, ask
yourself loud enough for all to hear, "Who BUYS this junk,
anyway?"

15. Repeat Number 14 in the jewelry department.

16. Ride a display bicycle through the store; claim you're
taking it for a "test drive."

17. Follow people through the aisles, always staying about
five feet away. Continue to do this until they leave the
department.

18. Play soccer with a group of friends, using the entire store
as your playing field.

19. As the cashier runs your purchases over the scanner, look
mesmerized and say, "Wow. Magic!"

20. Put M&M's on layaway.

21. Move "Caution: Wet Floor" signs to carpeted areas.

22. Set up a tent in the camping department; tell others you'll
only invite them in if they bring pillows from Bed and Bath.

23. Test the fishing rods and see what you can "catch" from
the other aisles.

24. Ask other customers if they have any Grey Poupon.

25. Drape a blanket around your shoulders and run around
saying,"...I'm Batman. Come, Robin, to the Batcave!"

26. TP as much of the store as possible.

27. Randomly throw things over into neighboring aisles.

28. Play with the calculators so that they all spell "hello"
upside down.

29. When someone asks if you need help, begin to cry and ask,
"Why won't you people just leave me alone?"

30. Make up nonsense products and ask newly hired
employees if there are any in stock, i.e., "Do you have any
Shnerples here?"

31. Take up an entire aisle in Toys by setting up a full scale
battlefield with G.I. Joes vs. the X-Men.

32. Take bets on the battle described above.

33. Hold indoor shopping cart races.

34. Dart around suspiciously while humming the theme from
"Mission: Impossible."

35. Run up to an employee (preferably a male) while
squeezing your legs together and practically yell at him " I
need some tampons!!"

36. Try on bras in the sewing/fabric department.

37. Try on bras over top of your clothes.

38. Attempt to fit into very large gym bags.

39. Attempt to fit others into very large gym bags.

40. Say things like, "Would you be so kind as to direct me to
your Twinkies?"

41. Set up a "Valet Parking" sign in front of the store.

42. Two words: "Marco Polo."

43. Leave Cheerios in Lawn and Garden, pillows in the pet
food aisle, etc.

44. "Re-alphabetize" the CD's in Electronics.

45. Make a trail of orange juice on the ground, leading to the
restrooms

46. When someone steps away from their cart to look at
something, quickly make off with it without saying a word.

47. Relax in the patio furniture until you get kicked out.

48. When an announcement comes over the loudspeaker,
assume the fetal position and scream, "No, no! It's those
voices again!"

49. Pay off layaways fifty cents at a time.

50. Drag a lounge chair on display over to the magazines and
relax. If the store has a food court, buy a soft drink; explain
that you don't get out much, and ask if they can put a little
umbrella in it.

How to survive while homeless?

Big Slick

I may be without a home soon, so I was looking for some advice. I have no job, no one I can stay with, no car to sleep in, and very little money. I have a few clothes a some hygiene products (toothpaste, deodorant, razor, soap).

Thank you.
I know this isn't the right category for this question, but I wasn't sure where else to put it. If anyone knows where this goes, please let me know. Thank you.

Answer
http://www.nationalhomeless.org for a shelter directory and good advice in preparing for homelessness. Before you get without a place get your ID in order, state issued ID card if no driver's license, copy of your birth certificate, if you are getting your food on your own apply for food stamps. If under 18 apply for medicaid too. Find an address where you can get mail. See if you are eligible for a free phone at either http://www.safeling.com or http://assurancewireless.com. (apply for the food stamps first and having them makes you eligible otherwise goes by income ), see if you have a friend or relative where you can leave what you can not carry with you but don't want to loose? Someone who will let you wash clothes or take a shower there once in a while?

If you are under 21 also check out http://800runaway.org if you are in the US or Canada or call 800 RUNAWAY . This is for anyone under 21 who does not have a good safe place to be not just runaways. They have the best directory on youth shelters and best info for young ppl on the street. Also in US go to http://www.feedingamerica.org or if somewhere else do a web search for food help and for soup kitchens + the place you are.

You need to keep warm in cool weather and cool in hot weather, clean water or other clean beverage, food, & to protect yourself &your stuff. A sleeping bag and small tent can be helpful but if no safe place to keep them and have to carry them around it marks you as homeless which sets you up for harassment & they may get stolen. If you are wanting to be less visibly homeless get 1 or 2 "survival blankets" which are a reflective plastic sheet that keeps body heat in in winter and sun heat out in summer. They fold up to about the size of a cigarette pack. Coleman makes them. WallMart and such places sell them so do some larger grocery stores or order on line. Cost $2-3. Add a plastic a drop cloth and some fish line to string it up with like a tent and you have shelter in your pocket. Get a $1 rain poncho that has its own plastic case.

Most cities have shelters usually a bunk room with a lot of people sharing a sleeping space. It is inside, they feed you breakfast and probably supper, they usually have showers, bad part it is a bunch of people some of whom are not well or clean physically or mentally all in one place. Sleeping in the street or in a park is not allowed in most urban places. Rural places have fewer shelters but more possibilities for camping and maybe privacy.

Places to hang out and be safe. Best place is a job one that includes a place to stay many motels, resorts, camps, farms do. Otherwise work nights if possible, safer and you get a lot less hassle if you are snoozing in daytime. Waffle house type place probably means daily tips. Also good are temp help agencies, dish washing, clearing tables. If you can get hired at a hospital or nursing home even doing laundry or room cleaning they will often pay for your training for a better job. Libraries seem like good places to just be but if they think you are homeless they will throw you out or bust you. Large hospital ER waiting rooms are fairly safe places so is the employment office especially if crowded (register for work of course and check the computer job listings some job may turn up and anyway it makes you look legit) Be cautious about changing clothes and washing up in public rest rooms. Locate a few where there is just the one 'commode and you can lock the door. If you must change in a stall one keep all your stuff in the stall and don't make it obvious you are changing or washing up because some people and places will complain or even throw a vagrancy charge at you.
Hope this helps it is not much fun but it is survivable

How do I plan a fishing camping trip in Canada?

large camping tent hire on ... Landes | mobile home, caravan, family tent rentals, for rent, for hire
large camping tent hire image

sassylassy

My boyfriend and I would like to, sometime this summer, go to Nova Scotia, and go one a fly fishing trip. I am not a fisher myself, but love the outdoors and I have always wanted to go camping, tent and everything! I need some advice on how to go about planning. Can you rent tents? How do you find a place to camp near lakes, rivers, etc.

Answer
OK, i will try to help you out here-i have fished in Alaska and Canada for trout and salmon for the past 35 years, going about once every two years, providing i have the cash.

Its one of the best areas to fly fish, and providing your boyfriend has fly fishing knowledge you should be OK. I must stress one thing though, HIRE A GUIDE-if its the only thing you do, it will mean your trip isn't wasted and you should catch something, plus they can alert you of the dangers of being in the wilds also they can give you advice of where to go.

If you can go with a proper company that deals with fishing trips in Canada, i use a few but its mainly for lodges with guides included-expect to pay around $4000 per person for this.

Some other advice is make sure you are confident in your outdoor skills, if you do wish to camp alone- a lot CAN go WRONG so be prepared.

Also make sure your equipment is up to the task- quality fly gear is essential and so is the skill in using it, being bale to CAST is VITAL as it saves a lot of wasted time.

Ensure you camping equipment is also suitable, you need to consider how far away you want to be from civilization-the further away the more dangers it presents -but often gives a once in a lifetime vacation.

Travel-how will you get there, often when i go to Alaska-depending on where i stay, the final journeny needs to be through float plane since its hard to get to the remote lodges, that hold the large salmon and trout.

LOOK through this site, it gives you a lot of great information-i would honestly suggest going for a lodge to start with, you will experience better fishing and everything will be planned for you, yet its still remote and relaxing

How to throw a huge Project x party?

Jean

I live in a rural area and have a lot of land. Im 16. I'm far away from neighbors. I have about 7 acres. I consulted my mom and she approved. I want to throw a huge party with at least 300 people. I am pretty sure I'd be okay with law enforcement on the count of no noise complaints from neighbors being far away. There might be some underage drinking so I was thinking to have a form minors have to sign in order to drink so they couldn't get back at me for that. I was thinking to hire a dj. Have a huge area for camping. A bonfire. A few security guards. A bunch of water balloons and a slip and slide because I don't own a pool. Have the house only be open for restroom reasons and indoor activities like dancing games and karaoke (living room mainly). Lock all bedrooms. People clock their belongings in their tents, cars, or the bedrooms s their safe. If anyone wanted to fight someone I'd have my security break it up. No firearms or weapons of any sort will be allowed. Have a bunch of decorations like balloons and what not. Maybe have a live bnd play. My side yard will be designated for parking and I'd have a parking director outside. All food and beverages will be on the back deck on a party table. I want to make sure I have things set and ready for the most worse cases. Does this sound good to you guys? Should I think about more things? Any ideas? Just want to have a party that will sky rocket my reputation. I'm going to a vocational school and I'll invite people from there and from my home school and they can bring people. There will be no destroying of property and that will result in discharge of the party. Im sure with that many people, thre will be someone who will bring illegal drugs (I personally don't do anything, but I won't stop them.) people will not be permitted to leave if they are too drunk or tired to drive, they will be forced to camp or have someone pick them up. All valuables will be locked and stored away properly. My moms boyfriend is a firefighter and could help if they party is out of control or the bonfire gets out of hand. People will be notified what the boundary of the propery is and there will be posted signs. The animals will be kept inside away from guests. There might possibly be two fires since the yard is rather large nd there will be a lot of people. I'm hiking a normal fire up front and a bigger fire out back. There will be trash cans everywhere (though people usually throw stuff on the ground) but for easier clean up. I'm sure people will be hooking up, they can do whatever thy want in their tnts, that's not my business. There will beva olleyball net set up for people to play some games if they want. Food and beverages will be provided. People will be notified that there could be drinking. Neighbors will be notified that there could be some noise since I'm far away but close enough to see their houses. There may be fireworks. I just want to make sure this is a party they won't forget. Thanks for your response.

Answer
This sounds AMAZING! I'm so jealous! Here's a few tips:

1) If you plan on 300 people, only invite 250. When people realise you're having such a huge party, they'll tell their friends and also bring people along with them!

2) Get twice as much food and drink as you think you'll need! If I was you I wouldn't supply alcohol for anyone apart from you and your close friends because if your mom gets charged with 300 counts of supplying alcohol to minors I can guarantee you'll never be allowed another party.

3) Be prepared for gatecrashers. People that force their way into parties aren't known for being polite, so get ready for foul language and possibly violence. I'd let your security know the second you see someone you don't want in your home.

4) When it's time for the fireworks, make sure there's no drunk people fumbling about with matches and explosives. Also, it's cool that your mom's boyfriend is a fireman because it would be a good idea to have him in charge of lighting the fireworks and making sure the bonfires stay under control.

5) Have a well-stocked First Aid kit in reach, because with such a big party, fights and accidents are bound to happen!

Most importantly, have fun! I've thrown a few parties, but at my first I was a nervous wreck! I was constantly running about checking that people were enjoying themselves that I forgot to enjoy it myself.
