Which tent is the best for a long term trip?

Thedreamer

My husband, daughter and I are going to be selling everything save for a rooftop storage container worth of stuff and a suitcase of clothes and driving across Canada to live in B.C (from Ontario). We'll be going in the last week of June next summer. I'm beginning to plan and gather equipment we'll need to camp our way across the country. We won't be driving straight across, instead we're taking our time and going out of our way to visit and see things as we go and camp instead of hotels.

I want to purchase a tent now, before this years camping season is over and have a chance to take it out and get used to it. Price is a small factor, but I'm willing to put good money into it as we love to camp and will continue to do so once we get out west, so durability, quality and performance is worth paying for.

Any suggestions for good 3-4 person tents would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Annibel .......for long term tent camping in moderate climates....no extremely cold weather or possible snow.....there are many tents to choose from. Keep in mind that you will want some space for some needed accommodations inside the tent......like the cooler to keep it out of the direct sun and for those who like to stretch out a bit. Oh and if you may be using one of those hard cots to sleep on......and consider if you want a 2 room type to separate parents from the kids for privacy or not.

Also......consider looking into a military type canvas tent if you may be in potential weather such as cold below 35......or rain.....
Canvas type military style will help keep in the warmth when needed. These tents accommodate from 2 people up to 40 people. The bigger the tent then the heavier it gets. Also consider the duration at any given site. One site you may only want to stay over night and another you may want to stay a week.

Canvas tents prevent most wildlife from easy access and modern tents do not.
I owned a 12 man military type tent.....a lot of space......weighed about 125 lbs......took about 30 minutes to set up and it kept out the cold and rain while camping in the Virginia Appalachian Mountains.

Best time to buy is in winter when no one else is and sales are too low. This is when you can get deals.

Hope I helped.

Where are some good places to camp with kids in KY?

Suzanne

We will have a 4, 7, & 8 year old with us. We are planning to camp in a tent. I would be interested in any suggestions for this or places that have cabins. Thank you!

Answer
Any of the State Park or Army Corps campgrounds would be great. Carter Caves State Park is one of my favorite places to camp. The kids will love the caves if you opt to take a tour. Carter Caves as well as nearly all of the state parks (http://www.parks.ky.gov) have modern bath houses and play grounds. Have fun!

Why aren't Native Americans allowed to hunt and gather in the National parks?

Half Dead

I think that would be awesome. Who cares if some kids get killed when they try to shoot buffalo? Instead of giving them casinos, why not give them what they really want which is their old way of life... living in tents exposed to the elements and such?
In addition, it would boost tourist photo opportunities. The Japanese would love it.

Answer
I seriously doubt that most of them want to live in tents and teepees. As much as we may glorify their way of life, their way of life back then was even harder because they lacked modern conveniences and medical knowledge. We may pretend that their herbs was far superior to our medicine today, but they weren't, and as with all medicines, herbal or not, there is a limitation. Eventually surgery and emergency first aid researched knowledge is needed.

Sure some may think that when they were ignorant to the world outside of their tribal way of life, they were happy, and maybe they were, but they are not ignorant, and being people, we should never ask them to remain ignorant to something better. In fact, we should tell them all, even those still living tribally that there are other resources, 18 years old does not have to be the avg lifespan. Yes, 18 was the avg for North American woodland Natives.

Now, that's avg, which means a good number of them lived longer, but an equally good number died while they were pretty much still children. Infant mortality rates were through the roof. I guarantee, it's only misguided spoiled white kids that think living in teepees and tents is actually a better way of life for a society of people. I think what they celebrate is their culture, their way of life so that they don't forget it. So that their religious and practical skills of how to use raw nature to survive don't all die out like so many of those skills already have. They were a people who had a deep respect for life and world of life that they lived in as a tribal society. They don't want their kids to lose that respect because a modern society that shelters people away from that kind of stuff can tend to cause us to become complacent about life and the life of nature.

But seriously, I don't think any of them would still today go out and live in teepees and tents. I think they've pretty much realized that they have to move on, and have decided that they must keep their culture alive in today's world because yesterday's world is done gone and that can't be changed.

How can my mother enjoy Heaven, knowing that her atheist son will be tortured forever in the fires of Hell?

Q. Does she forget I ever existed?
Does she cease to care about my welfare?
Are either of those acceptable alternatives?

Answer
First of all, thanks for posting such a poignant question. I guess I like this one because it draws attention to both a misconception (of Hell) and a piece of information (our post-Judgment memories) that is seldom taught from modern pulpits.

The popular Dantean images of a fiery Hell where souls are condemned to an eternity of burning torment is not what the scriptures tell us. This misconception originated centuries ago by clergy who found it beneficial to use fear as a device to insure services packed full of tithe-bearing church members, eager to support the church leaders who possessed the information that would help them get assigned "upstairs" rather than "downstairs". It's a very effective device, for it is still in wide use today. If you ever get the opportunity to attend a "hellfire and brimstone" tent revival, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

What the scriptures actually say is that the souls found lacking on the Day of Judgment will be utterly and completely consumed by God's fire, blotted out of existence so totally that even the very memory of them will be wiped out. God is a loving God, and He doesn't want any of His kids to agonize across the unfathomable expanse of Eternity. But our Father is a STRICT God, too, and because so many of his kids took Lucifer's side at the katabole, He knows it is time to clean house, lest the bad "infect" more and more of His good kids. It's just how things have to be in order to return to the joyous state that existed in the previous Age. If your mother spends Eternity in Heaven with God, and you are condemned to erasure, basically, she'll enjoy Heaven quite well because she'll have no recollection of you whatsoever. My recommendation is to figure out how to spend Eternity with your Mom. If you ask her, I'm sure she'll be thrilled to give you some pointers.

I hope to see you there someday. (Just not any time soon, ok?) :)

My mom is adopting toddlers from the Philippines. Where can I find traditional Filipino toys, games, anything?

I'd like to make her a gift basket for Christmas and so far I've found children's books, cook books, and books to learn Tagalog. Is there anything I can get her that's not a book?

Answer
modern day filipinos have the same toys as any normal kid have but long ago, traditional filipino games use indigenous materials that can be found on their environment such as coconut shells, wood, abaca, bamboo, rattan, and clay. for example, miniature clay pots for "play-cooking", abaca for dolls, and any toy that can be made out of these materials. most of them don't have toys yet at this age and use their imagination and resourcefulness to substitute things like blanket for tents as playhouses, leaves as food(a little dangerous tho) and stones to assemble things. the bulk of traditional filipino toys are in school age years.

so its ok if you'd just give her toys that can be found anywhere. besides, these traditional things are very hard to find nowadays.

Where does slavery still exist IN THE WORLD?

?

It's for a homework assignment! Can anyone tell me the answer?
Can you guys be more specific?

Answer
Everywhere... And I'm not being sarcastic.

Kids are abducted all the time in the US and you can buy sex with them on Craig's List.

In Africa, slavery is extraordinarily common for field workers, house slaves, and the sex trade.

In the US, people smuggled in to the country are held in sweat shops and "Massage Parlors" where they are held and forced to work or have sex to "Work Off" the cost of their transportation.

The Pacific Islands have a thriving sex tourism industry that includes children being held by force, either sold by their parents or kidnapped.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic are known centers of child slavery, which is accepted by the governments because it is a "Cultural Practice".

In Africa, Asia, and the Middle East there are thousands of "Child Soldiers" that are part of tribal warfare and holy warfare... The boys are fed drugs, alcohol, and sex then exposed to violence and death to get them to fight for the cause and the girls are given drugs and alcohol and weapons training during the day and then are sent to the tents to be sex slaves at night.

Whenever there is a natural disaster anywhere on earth, the slave traders swarm the site of the disaster to kidnap lost and orphaned children.

MSNBC did a series on the sex and slavery trade in America. Teenagers and young children kidnapped then taken on "A Circuit" across the country where they are held in hotels and at truck stops for use as unwilling sexual partners.

There are, literally, more than 30 million slaves estimated to be held in captivity and those don't count places like the Sex/Prostitute Villages in India where children are sold to "Madams" by their parents or kids being pimped out by their parents in Italy, Mexico, etc. etc. etc.

In Africa, it is quite common for a father to give his daughter to the person he owes in trade for writing off the debt, sometimes there are terms and she can be released after a time but usually it is "You are now his."

Modern low cost ideas for decorating?

kids tent modern on Bed With Tent For Children - Buy Modern Loft Bed,Kids Loft Beds,Kids ...
kids tent modern image
Q. Im looking for some creative ideas of inspiration for decorating a new place....
cant paint- and cant put any holes in the walls.

Answer
Build a free standing frame.
The first idea is something like a shogi screen but then I thought of those free standing chalkboards we had in class rooms when I was a kid.
Basically, it is a "T" made of 2"x4" boards 7' high(or less if you have low ceilings). Turn them with the T side(like feet about six inches long) down and connect with a 2"x2" board across the top and bottom approximately the length of the largest blank wall.
With a plant in a heavy pot at each end (to keep kids or pets from climbing ) hang fabric from the frame, you can hide a hallway or ugly closet doors leaving openings to access them.
You can hang a lot of gathered fabric to make a tent effect, or just stretch it and staple it to the frame for a fresh canvas look that you can change the color of seasonally if you like.
Also if you stand your screen eight to ten inches from the wall you can hide ugly book cases or clutter and back light it with a lamp for mood and always present a fresh clean uncluttered line.

What did women do before "womens products"?

skjbf.f

You know what im talking about.
I just heard that pads weren't made until the 1920's

Answer
There are many tribes whose traditions for womens menses involved a variety of activities that precluded wearing feminine products. It was a tradition among some tribes that women lived in separate tents and wore deer thatch (very soft pleasant feeling hide) to slow the bleeding. most tribes forbade women from doing any manual labor, any activities with the tribe, even forbade them from doing housework/hutwork. They were required to sit rest or walk, take many baths and eat the healthiest foods (usually also the most tasty) available. In some south American tribes the use of cocoa was forbidden except during menses and was strictly kept for women. Once the development of cotton clothing occurred women wore a variety of cloths to regulate the flow. While rural women in America wore cottons many people wore silk or linens with similar material to the modern feminine products. Those "rags" as they were called were thrown away or washed depending on the culture and were actually as hygienic as the products you use today, if not more comfortable. There are many women throughout the world who do not use products instead still using the "rags"

But really what's interesting is not what they wore but how often they wore it. According to the best research women have to use theose products 600 times in their lifetime on average. Yet women from earlier time periods often had to use them far less as little as 100 in a lifetime. Part of this was because they had more kids and fewer menses accordingly but apparently in general women had fewer menses in any given year, 7 to the modern women's 12, and each menses was shorter by at least a day, and it also produced less bleeding. So while you have good products they just used them less. Which would you rather have 7 short periods with cotton, or 12 long periods with modern feminine products?
