Jordan S

I have to do community service hours as part of my Diversion Program to get charges dropped for theft. I was wondering where in Toronto that I could volunteer. I have already tried Salvation Army, Goodwill, and all animal shelters, spca, human society, etc, but I was unable because they are for theft charges. I am kind of at a standstill, any advice would be great! ?

Can you give me an itinerary if we will go to disney world for four days in all the theme parks?

vi_world10

Me and my family(mom, dad, 14 yr old,13,10 and 4) are going to disney world. Can you give me an itinerary or tips to fully enjoy or explore all parts of the disney world? We want to avoid long lines. We are going there at the last week of april. Are there too much people? Thank you and God bless.

Answer
I would get to a park (whichever one you go to that day) get there early. Most of the day, take your time to see what you want to see, and don't be afraid to stop and enjoy any of the surprises you might come across.

One thing to take advantage of is FastPasses. These are machines that you can put your ticket into and it gives you a time to return to the ride. (Lets say there is a 45 minute wait for Mickey's Philharmagic when you get there at 11:45am. You go to the front of the entrance, and get a FastPass. It might say something like "Return between 1:15pm and 2:15pm". Now when you return in that timeframe you will get into the "FastPass line and probably wait only 5 minutes.) And now you have time to hit some other nearby rides, grab a bit to eat, shop or just sit and relax a bit. These work great.

On the day you choose to go to Magic Kingdom, here are a few tips.
If you ride the monorail, ask to be put into the front. You may have to wait several trips, but it is worth it. The only thing is it only holds 4 passengers, so you might have to split up, just wait for the rest of the party at the other end.

When you enter the park (if you are there for opening) immediately get on the train and ride it all the way to Toon Town (this is in the back of the park.) You wait behind a rope until Toon Town opens and all the characters come out! Goofy may even choose the 4 year old to go ride his Barnstormer Roller Coaster with him. (one child per day is chosen- in 2004 Goofy chose my niece! It was awesome!)

Now you can go through Mickey's house, Minnie's House and the Judges Tent . These are where you get in line and can get your photo taken w/ characters.

I hope you will be doing a character meal while you are there. Loads of fun.

If you don't plan on doing any water parks, I would do one park per day. I like this as opposed to park hopper, where you spend part of the day in one park and then "hop" over to another park for the rest of the day. We usually do one park per day and it works out great.

At MGM, you don't want to miss the Beauty and the Beast show, as well as Rock N Roller Coaster. There are many other things to do there as well, but those 2 are "don't miss".

The 4 year old might not be tall enough for some rides, but many have a "child swap" area. You would all stay in line together until you get near the front, then part of the group gets on the ride while others wait with the little one. When the first group gets off the ride, they "swap" and stay with the child while the rest go on the ride.

At Epcot- you have to go on Soarin'. It is in the Land Pavilion.
Test Track is a lot of fun, too. (again, I am not sure about the 4 year old and any height restrictions.)

Just about any time of year there are lines at Disney World. I would suggest renting a stroller for the 4 year old. (I think you can get a discount if you let them know you want it for all 4 days. You get a different one at every park, but you can prepay or something like that) The stroller will give the little one a chance to rest (little legs get tired quickly as there is a LOT of walking)

Most of all, just enjoy everything you get to see and do. Don't try to do it all because so many people miss a lot by rushing from one ride to the next! Look for the ducks and rabbits in the gardens at Magic Kingdom. Try a ride just for the sake of doing it. (I had never wanted to ride the Teacups because I thought of it as a kid's ride- let me tell you- it is now one of my favorites!)

Take time to do stuff the other people in your family want to do. Remember, it is their vacation, too!!

Don't let the crowds and heat get everyone frustrated. There is nothing worse than seeing people argue in Walt Disney World.

Most of all-
Have a magical time!!

Answer
there's loads, you can rent a dog friendly caravan or a cottage by the sea then take your dog to the beach, let him swim or have a paddle in the sea, throw him a ball on the beach, meeting other dogs, give him a walk on the beach, buy an ice cream and give him a bit, or have a bbq and give him a burger and a sausage =]

or your dog camping, i took mine, we got him a dog tent and a dog sleeping bag although he didn't like his sleeping bag zipped up so he was in it, we had a bbq and gave him a burger, sausage and chicken wing, we also let him join in in our activities, he came on a hike with us, he came swimming with us in the lake and he even came cycling, i brought a little trailer what you add to the back of your bike what little kids sit in and he went in there xD

What are some toys that kids of all ages can play with?

B

What are some toys that kids ages 6-12 can play with together? There is also a 1 1/2 year old. Preferably something that can be played with outside and at least 4 or 5 kids can play with at a time or take turns playing. Something the 1 1/2 year old would enjoy too if you can possibly think of anything to fit with that age. We are already buying a slipping slide and sand toys. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Something that isn't very expensive either. Thanks.

Answer
these are things my kids play with and they are a girl 6 and boy 3.

soccer ball

jr football or foam one might be better

Frisbee

a rubber ball for playing kick ball with bases. you can make ur own bases and the dollar tree did carry them

jump ropes

kid size rakes

plastic t ball

paint, lots of paint and boxes or posters are 2 for a dollar at $ tree
Spray paint a big huge box, let them i mean, and make a play house outta it.

How bout a tent? If not that, they could make a fort using kit chairs and blankets and sheets and stuff

if you have a table, uno and other games without tiny pieces might be good. My daughter loves uno!

horse shoes is fun too, they make them mobile kinds so you can bring them in when your done with them

kites are a $ at the $ tree too

who doesnt like bubbles or bubble blowers? You can get an awesome bubble blower at wal mart for not too much like 10 or 15 dollars and its GREAT LOADS OF FUN

potting soil and seeds is fun too

dont forget the boom box, gotta have tunes outside right?

I hope this helps it was just off the top of my head!

what do I

from target..it comes with ''shock-corded'' poles
it doesnt come with any instructions,im assuming it's suppose to be so easy that one doesnt need them..LOL

i dont get it,theres no phone # either
i cant get it together

all it has is 2 seperate poles that are already lile attached??
any ideas??
it;s just a cheap basic lil tent for my toddler

Answer
Oh this is hard to explain in words!

The two poles will look like a big X when you put the tent together.

Your tent should have an opening where the poles can go. Enter one at a time, connecting each section as you go.

It is tricky at the end, but the tent should have a bit of give to it.

Hope this helps! Can you ask anyone? You could ask a neighbor kid and play it off like no big deal, you are letting him help bc you thought he might find it fun!

Good tent ideas for baby?

Hi I am trying to find some of the portable tents i can get for my 5 month old cause we are going away to the beach in a few weeks and trying to find one that i can use for that and if u know of any what stores have them thanks so much.

Answer
We used to go to the beach when our kids were babies. We'd take their porta-crib (pack-n-play) and use a large beach umbrella to keep them in the shade. I am grandma now and I bought a pack-n-play that came with a cover - very nice for the beach and camping, too. I've seen some beach tents at Target so I imagine most of those types of stores like K-Mart or Wal-Mart would probably have them, too. Also, try a sporting goods store. We have Dunham's in our area and they carry that type of thing, too. I have also seen them on eBay. You want to only get the kind of tent that is specifically designed for the beach as the type of tent that you would use for camping, such as a small dome tent is not made out of the right material and does not have the right ventilation for the beach. Having been a tenting family for years, camping tents are incredibly hot inside when the sun is shining on them. You don't want to use this type of tent at the beach - your baby will overheat in it.

Please provide examples of games, food, party favor ideas, as well as, decorating ideas.
The guest of honor is a boy.
THANKS FOR ALL AND ANY IDEAS! :)

Answer
I am planning one for my 5 andsix year old which is a few days apart. I thought a Training Camp would be good but cant decide between Pirates or Superheros!

So examples for superheros would be
Invitations - Superhero Academy! Print them on a small triangular shape that you can attach to a lollipop to make it look like a cape. You can even cut out tiny paper masks with black paper and stick it to the "Head"
When they arrive they can choose their own mask and cape and belt. You can buy cheap secondhand material to make these, fasten with velcro.
There will be several tasks to complete.
* Such as Leaping tall buildings in a single bound: I would have little milk cartons and cereal boxes painted like buildings.
* Collect radioactive isotopes: They can crawl threw a darkened tent or tunnel with glowsticks scattered inside.
* Lava pit: Take a wide board and placed it over a small swimming pool. The board is held up with cinder blocks and then add a fog machine to add the element of atmosphere. The kids could walk across the board. Add red food coloring to the water to make it look like lava.
* Blasting Aliens!: Have cardboard aliens or balloon aliens they have to spray with silly string
* Strength training: Paint foam balls blackand mount one on either side of a broomstick to look like heavy weights! If you have it in front of a city backdrop, this would be a good photo op for parents!
There are so many you could make up. Once theyhave finished you can give them a Superhero Academy Certificate!!! The certificate can say all the tasks at the party. Decorations would look great with city scapes cut out and painted, with those captions that used to be on batman "kapow!" etc stuck everywhere. Maybe a phonebooth?

Pirate Academy would be similar but invitations would be like a treasure map with the edges burnt. Games similar but changed to piratey things. First give them a booty bag and when they finish each task they get something for their booty!
*Make a pirate hat! You can use templates printed off the internet.
*Swab the deck: Get some mops or brooms and they have to push a balloon through a coarse.
* Treasure hunt. You can buy cheap plastic beads and spray them gold. Or buy chocolate money.
*Walk the plank: have a plank raised where they have to walk across. Others can throw cannon balls, black balloons or painted foam ballsto knock them off.
*Pin the beard on the pirate!
Decorating, you can make an island in the corners with yellow or brown sheets or blankets. Cardboard painted like palm trees and some treasure chests. You can buy fishing nets cheap online to string across your roof, stick some plastic fish in them. Wine barrels are good. Paint a cheap foam drink cooler to look like treasure chests for all the drinks. Red and black balloons and streamers to finish it off! Gold painted beads and treasure for the tables looks great!

Where can I get a cheap tent for a 5 foot 1 and a half inch tall kid?

What are some main differences between australian and american cultures?

large camping tents australia on Oz Trail - TENTS - 4-6 PERSON DOME TENTS - Camping Military Tactical ...
large camping tents australia image

sapphiredr

please add your references

Answer
The difference's are huge, In Australia they make us all here very focused on education and active involvement in sport.

Also we are very career and business minded and all have had further higher education training.

There is very low to no crime or guns and children still play out doors and most people here prefer to be mainly all out doors socializing with there mates. The school curriculum system here is the highest in the world and it's a good place to raise children.

At 18 in Australia your a legal adult and can drink in bars and go to night clubs, vote, buy a house or business etc

People in Australia don't care or are opinionated by religion or politics or what someone on TV said. So you don't ever see religious people accosting people in public places or have people begging for money.

I live in Sydney in the CBD it's a very 24/7 lifestyle here with a very large range of things to see and do, being a world class city and there is no city on Earth like it, with worldwide known restaurants and cafe's, think of any country in the world there is a restaurant or cafe that caters for any countries cuisine.

Americans who come here really get blown away and migrate here like I did. The economy is very strong and the standard of living is very high there is very low unemployment heaps of business opportunity's. The minimum wages here are triple times more than the US minimum wage plus the benefits of paid superannuation, shift penalties and loading plus 10 days paid sick leave and five weeks paid holidays a year.

Women get paid maternity leave also a $5,000 baby bonus if having a child. It doesn't cost a cent to see a doctor or go into hospital or dentist they are free. Just like a 24/7 emergency doctor coming to your home.

We have many more freedoms here than in the United States also anti discrimination laws and same rights for all people and a very good legal system. Police here are friendly and helpful they don't point guns at people.

Australian fashion is world known we do dress up very classy and smart casual ,so you never see cargo pants or polo shirts or tented tee shirts unless they are tourists. Most every well known American actor, actress or singer all comes here to clothes shop as well many other known high profile overseas entertainers. So you see people like Paris Hilton, Ricki Lake, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Dianna Ross, Janet Jackson etc shopping here. They love it here because were no one ever bothers them, most are here now for Australian fashion week.

There are no ghettos or people living in trailer parks here or in low standard housing. There are a lot of weekend getaway's or family holiday resorts. You can go to the beaches or to the mountains, camping, or pack the car to go skiing or jump on a plane for a weekend interstate or to New Zealand. No where is crowded here. People are more laid back and everyone looks healthy, tanned and fit and speaks English.

The only Americanisms here would be fast food outlets like Mc Donald's, Hungry Jacks, Pizza Hut, KFC, Gloria Jeans, but there not really popular as the cafe's also the American shows on TV.

Otherwise you notice the big difference here in culture's as Australians aren't stressed out and don't act or think or ever materialistic brag of our wealth or stereotype people we use our freedoms of speech to improve and make life better in our country. Also we have a very good Prime Minister and Government in our free society.

Most American's don't realize how big Australia is it's just a little bigger than the USA and the state I live in NSW is twice the size the state of Texas and there are just only 20 million people living in all of Australia. There is 303 million people all living on the same land mass in the USA.

For a country with such a small population we have many well world know actors, actress's, music artist, artists, building and clothes designers, doctors, scientists, inventors, sports people as well as known world wide companies and financial businesses.

A little help with a camping swag please...?

David

So I friend and I are going to go bushwalking for a bit out on a nature reserve behind his house. I recently bought a swag so that it would be easier than lugging around a tent and easier to pitch, but I came to problem, how do I carry it while walking? Is there some kind of bag I can buy for it or something? Please help.
I live in Australia by the way. Western Australia to be exact. If that helps.

Answer
In Oz, a "swag" is what we here States-side would call a "bedroll" or "bivy sack".

http://www.australianswags.co.uk/

A "swag man" is a wanderer who travels with such a bedroll.

Clearly you need a backpack to haul it in. You could just buy a bare frame pack with shoulder straps and hip belt (we can buy them in military surplus stores here) and then strap it on with webbing buckles or bungee cords. But it would probably be better to get a large single compartment internal frame backpack, maybe 40 or 50 liters. Won't you be needing to carry something for hauling water bags, food and other kit anyway? If your swag is small enough you could roll it up and lash it to the bottom of a smaller pack -- most have buckles or tabs on the bottom to attach a packed sleeping bag or tent to,

I did a Google search for "military surplus camping Australia" and saw page after page of dealers so I am sure there are some handy to you.

As far as "lugging" a tent, a good quality nylon backpacking tent would be under 2 kilos and pack down the size of a large bread loaf, so I doubt the swag saved you much weight, especially if it is canvas. In fact the single swags on that link I posted weigh a whopping 4.9 kilos!! My entire backpacking kit including 2-man bugproof tent, sleeping bag, pad and stove doesn't weigh that much altogether. But I suppose carrying all that weight builds character, eh mate?

I want to have a fun relaxed wedding reception (with about 200 guests.) It is going to be outside under a tent on a big lawn at a golf course and there is a putting green next to it that i want to bring golf balls, putters and pitching wedges for people to use. I was also wanting to set up something fun for kids to play with thats not messy (i.e. no craft table) or too expensive (i wish we could get a bouncy house.) Any ideas?

I don't know how many kids you plan on having but im am getting these for my flower girls they come with crayons so hopefully this will keep them having fun. If not then hire a "baby sitter" if your having over 10 kids you will pry want one anyway. parents tend to let their kids run around and not always keep them under control but if you give someone that as their job they can have the kids play tag.. or play other little games in a circle so that they are not being destructive

How Do I Become an Alaska Fisherman?

Juan

I have heard about collage kids going to Alaska to work on Boats for the summer and making enough money to put them selves through collage. How do I land a job like that? I am from oregon, I wrestled in high school and collage so I have good work ethic. I have student loans that I would love to just pay

Thank You!

Answer
Here in Alaska I have heard about a lot of people that came to Alaska to work on a boat, but end up living in a tent from not being hired. Some even said they were told they had the job, but learned they really didn't when they got here.
Most of these ones are out of state people who have boats in Alaska. There are some Alaskans that do have boats, but some will usually only have family or friends working on them.

Q. I'm volunteering @ a camp, & when camp is over, I baby sit until the parents get off from work. The kids find TV & internet boring after awhile, & sometimes, they want to go somewhere, like the park or something but we can't because of too many kids to fit in the car. How do I keep them entertained?

& every 2 hours, they're hungry. I feed them meals & give them snacks, & 2 hours later, they're whining about hunger.

I understand they get bored by doing the same thing all the time, but how can I make some variety? They don't even like to read. The ages range from 3-17, & sadly the kids 10 & under have better behavior than the kids over 10. & the teenagers are setting a bad example for them.

They get so bored that they become angry & then take their anger out on each other & start fighting, & I have to punish them. I try to do things with them, & they whine, saying "We don't like that. That's lame."

Answer
When I used to babysit, I used to have this giant boot box that I would carry fun stuff to do it, such as: tons of stickers, crayons, books, construction paper, origami supplies (for the older kids), coloring books, some of my favorite movies from childhood, etc. One activity that I used to do with kids of all ages was to make tshirts. I'd buy a pack of plain white shirts, a variety of colors in paint for fabric (now there are even fabric markers), and some throw away stencils. All in all, it'd cost me about 20 bucks. I'd break down some old cardboard boxes and stretch the shirts over the top (to give a flat work area) and let the kids go to town on them. Clean up is a snap if you spread an old sheet on the ground and do it outside in the backyard. It was always fun. When babysitting at night, I used to bring my dad's old 3 person camping tent and set it up in the living room all of us would pretend we were camping. We'd make a construction paper campfire, eat raw marshmallows and popcorn, and tell stories.
Just be creative and excited about the activities that you are doing and the kids and you will have a great time.

What color or exactly to decorate my kids bedroom?

Proud mom

I am moving to a house and will needed painted. I wanted to paint and decorate my kids room. Both of them are boys. Three and a five year old. They both will be sleeping in the same room together. I am trying to figure out want to do for them to be happy in our new place and they like cars and balls. I really want it to be special.

Answer
Do you have a bed? If not-here is a link for a loft bed w/a tent. Its so cute. Too bad its not a bunk bed, though. Then you could get the sports bean bags, basketball clothes hamper.. etc

sports bed:
http://www.roomville.com/products/productDetail.asp?PROD_ID=357&DEPid=0&ROOT_dept=0

sports bean bag chairs:
http://www.target.com/gp/search.html/601-6331324-2538546?field-keywords=basketball%20bean%20bag%20chair&afid=yahoosspslp&lnm=basketball%20bean%20bag%20chair&ref=tgt_adv_XSJH1060

I wish my 4 year old wanted sports, I have found many more ideas and things to go with sports. but he wants monster trucks! I may get a tire and dip it in brown paint and make muddy tire tracks over his blue walls. Then hang posters up and maybe even get a wall murial. Also hang or paint road signs. if you do a search on wall murials and/or road signs you will find lots of ideas. the murials are really too expensive for me so I may try to do it myself! (MAYBE) they also have the wall "stick ups" for sports or cars. they are removable stickers. do a search if your interested.
anyway. good luck and have fun!

What are great toys to get my daughter who will be one in Sep?

*Mommy to

My little princess is turning one in September and I would love to know some fun toys to get her and to put on her b-day wish list. No price limit I just want them to be fun and for her to enjoy them. Shes a very happy baby and loves noises, lights, the water, everything really..Shes kinda girly too =) Please include links if possible. Thanks so much!!

Answer
I would just take a look at amazon.com and browse through the other toys they have listed. There are TONS of great toys out there for one year olds. Here are some other suggestions, as well as a link to get you started.

http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-77865-musical-Tea-Set/dp/B00005ATWC/ref=pd_sim_t_6

look at the "Customers who bought this also bought:" list.

- A toy baby or doll that the child can start to interact with in pretend play.
- Tea set
- Dollhouse
- Wooden or plastic kids size table and chairs
- A bike or ride on wagon is great fun for this age
- Good quality paint, brushes and large art paper
- A small tent and tunnel can be used inside or outside
- Toy farm house with animals and a tractor is good for learning different animals and the noises they make
- Mega blocks - it will be a while until the toddler is building robots and buildings out of blocks but she will love destroying what ever mom or dad creates and will eventually start to put 2 blocks together
- Dress up box - this box can be added to at each birthday. At age one having a few crazy hats, scarves and fake glasses can be fun.
- Music is an excellent gift for this age group, the toddler will soon be doing actions to songs, dancing and even singing along to familiar tunes
- Books are a great gift at any age

What's a good non-toy present for a two year old?

I need to get a present for my nephew. Besides books, art supplies, etc, what would be a good gift for a two year old?

Answer
A pop-up tent or tunnel (they make small, inexpensive ones for kids - even tents and tunnels that connect!).

Im sorry for your Faimly.
If it was me I would sell everything and leave the area. I would spen the last bit of time with my grand mother. I have lost mine and she lived accross the country from me.
When your ready to leave make food for days before hand for example cook Meals store them in Eskies as your driving use them for your meals. Make sand wiches, Cordial or better still have plewnty of water. if you need to spend the night any where use a Tent. The kids will enjoy it as a adventure. I have a 6 yr old daughter. Make up stories and Get them to pack a Back pack each filled with their toys, books stuff. Pack pillows in the car. Then when all this is done just say good bye and go for it.

What size of camping tent should I choose?

Adela

I am planning a camping trip with two friends. We need to buy a camping tent but I don't know what size of the tent is suitable for three people. I did a little search online and someone said should choose a tent which can accommodate two more person because there must be some space for the camping equipment. Is this true? Is a five man tent a little larger for three?

Answer
A five man tent is just fine. I do a lot of camping and I use a 2-3 person tent for just me, and a 4 person tent when I take the wife and kid along.

Unless your back country camping you can't go wrong with getting a bigger roomier tent.

What are some cool things to do with kids ages 1-3?

I have two little sisters who i babysit all the time. One of my sisters are one.And the other is three.I just can't seem to find enough things in a day for them to do.So basically i would like to know what kids their age would like to do!

Answer
We used to love making forts and tents as little ones. Anything from using blankets and chairs to newspapers or cardboard boxes and stuff. If you roll up newspaper real tight and use a little tape it makes good tent poles. Home made playdough was fun too, there are lots of recipes online. Blowing homemade bubbles. Having an impromptu earth day, picking up garbage in the neighborhood while taking a walk with the wagon or stroller. Going to a park. Free activities in the area, storytime at the library, etc... Listening to music, dancing, making a music video. Make helping out with the housework fun. Google some toddler activities online and you'll probably find lots more!
Good Luck!

How to stop toddler getting cold in bed?

My two year old sleeps in a single bed, but up until now has still been in his Grobag. He's tall for his age and is therefore getting too big for the sleeping bag, but when I try him under the duvet no matter how well I tuck it in he ends up uncovered and cold in the night.

Has anyone ideas on how to address this? I've seen duvet clips in the shops, but am not sure I like the idea of pinning him under the covers like that.

Answer
Will he wear fleece footie pajamas? I know some kids won't, but my son loves them and they keep him warm throughout the night because he's zipped up from head to toe in a little cocoon...

If he won't, you can always try to get a bigger sleeping bag... my son has a toddler size Transformers one from Target that he snuggles with in the play tent in his room; it was pretty cheap but very warm.

Personally, I wouldn't try a heater just because my toddler is always curious and the orange glow from the heater would just be asking for my son to reach out and grab it, obviously leading to far worse problems. Maybe if you can get one that can go on a shelf or somewhere out of reach, that could work for you. I personally wouldn't risk having one of those around my child while he is unsupervised. lol
Good luck =)

How many of you have slumber parties of camp-outs with your kids?

Every couple of weeks, my daughters and I will set up a tent in our living room and have a "camp-out." I'll make smores and hotdogs to eat and tell them stories. We also have sleepovers. For our sleepovers, we pull some sleeping bags into the living room, order pizza, bake cookies and watch a movie together. My kids are only 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. Their dad thinks it weird because we do this at home. I think it's fun for them. I remember my mom doing things like this when I was younger. How many of you do silly things like this for your kids?

Answer
I do fun things all the time. When one of us can't sleep and we don't have work or school the next day, we wake the other up and ask if they want a midnight party. We tell gohst stories on a normal night at home as if we are cmaping. We sleep on the hyda bed when we have movie nights. and we play silly games... tonight we played .... 'you smell like'... We took a big sniff of the other person and said what they smell like... it is silly. but when your kid laughs becuase you met them on their level that is cool. You husband may think it's silly, just tell him that kids like silly and he shouldn't crtisize you and he should try getting down to their level. You are making memories

We have two old dogs that do not like to play with other dogs or kids, so campgrounds are not a good place for them. We can either car camp or tent camp- just not with close neighbors. We were thinking Olympic Peninsula, but that is negotiable. Any ideas? And thanks for looking!

Answer
You can camp in our National Forests... if you drive down and of the forest roads (the gravel ones) you'll see places along the side where people have camped before.. you'll see fire rings to use.. BUT these places do not have running water or bathroom, so you'll be primitive camping (where you have to bring all your water to drink and cook with).

I would highly suggest buying Don Wright's Guide to Free Campgrounds. It's a book (an east and west addition) that lists campgrounds in forests and other secluded places that are free and $12 and under for one night's stay. I use it as my camping bible.. I don't want to stay where RVs and generators are... I suggest you get a copy.. it will help you plan your trip better.
Good luck & have fun camping!

Parents who love to camp: What do you take on a tent camping trip?

Q. For our anniversary, my husband and I have decided to go tent camping at the state park (just me and him). I haven't been tent camping ever before in my life! What the heck does a girl need to take on a camping trip in the middle of the woods?

Also, have your kids experienced tent camping? Is that something you think children under 5 can enjoy?
Oh believe me.. there will be condoms... and chocolate... and yeah we'll need coffee, lol.

Answer
Here's a good list: http://www.lovetheoutdoors.com/camping/checklists.htm

It might have more on it than what you need. I printed this out when my husband and I went camping for our anniversary a weekend in August. If you are cooking, you'll need more.

We've never taken our kidlet who is 3. We will next year. We rented canoes and paddles through 7 lakes that were all connected. I was worried she'd get bored after 20 minutes. The park we went to is very kid friendly- big playground, a beach, and all the kids brought bikes or scooters.

Where is a fun and exciting place to take a vacation that is driving distance from San Diego?

tent camping with young children image

Rod Knocke

I would like it to be less than 800 miles away and not too expensive along with young children friendly. Camping is OK if it is not too humid of a climate. THANKS

Answer
One of the best vacations I ever had was at June Lake. You can camp, boat, fish, hike, practice your photography or just plain relax. June Lake is close to Mammoth in the eastern sierras. It's 400 miles from San Diego and takes about 8 hours to drive including potty breaks and lunch. The scenery is postcard beautiful. Snow capped mountains ring the lakes even in July. All the campgrounds in the area have very nice facilities. Cabins are available for rent or you can bring your own RV. Tent camping is OK, but there is an occasional bear sighting.

What we did was to use Adventure in Camping. Here is their website. Basically you rent a 5th wheel trailer, tell them what campground you will be staying in and they deliver a really nice trailer and set it up for you. Then when you are done you call them and they come and pick it back up.http://adventureincamping.com/

The kids will have a ball up there.

Any suggestions on where to camp in California?

AJ

My family and I are looking for a great place to camp in California. We love being surrounded by redwoods, but would like to stay near central California (close to where we live). Yosemite is booked and we have stayed at the KOA in Santa Cruz and liked it. Does anyone have any other suggestions on great places for a family with young children?

Answer
Good evening AJ,

I hope you are having a great day. AJ, it is very hard to pick out a good location if I do not know what type camping you mean? Do you like tent, cabin, or sleeping bags? I like rough areas with fly fishing and hiking. I made three (3) trips last year into the Mighty High Sierras Mountains. I usually hike over Kearsarge Pass, which is an old Indian trail, to Bull Frog at 10,000 feet. I have been camping and hiking the Sierras since 1958.

I remember as kids we would lie in our sleeping bags and count shooting stars all night. Your mind would run amok with the wonders and vastness of space. You could point out and view constellations which until then were part of chapters in a school text book. We would fall asleep viewing the heavens and our own Milky Way.

http://www.naturalbornhikers.com/KearsargePass/KearsargePass.htm

Some of my best camping trips were with my family as a kid in Yosemite. We could not wait to see the fire falls at night (website below). I feel so sorry for people like you and your family, especially the kids. The fire falls stopped in 1968. Today, you must have an appointment for two years in advance to get a camping spot. The crowds are unbelievable, times change.

As for your question, I ready do not know how rough you want. Try Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. They should have some openings. I tried to give websites with phone numbers.

My favorite camping locations are along the Kern River. I can always find a good location because I know the area like the back of my hand. The camping can be mild to rough. I have included websites with phone numbers. On the first website, click on Hospital Flat and Camp 3. Both sites are right next to slow moving riverâ¦.great areas for kids.

Does anyone have a sugar glider?

Lexi

I am thinking of getting one/two. .

I usually work during the day, but will be home at night and I know they are nocturnal.

I also have a dog and 3 kids.. I was wondering if sugar gliders would be a good pet for me and my family..?

We are going to look at the tomorrow so if there is any information that would be great!

Answer
Hey Lexi,

I own two sugar gliders and researched for litterally MONTHS before I got mine. I still research about their diets and I'm also active in sugarglider.com forums. (which I REALLY suggest you check out before you get them)

You MUST get two gliders. In the wild they live in colonies and are sociable animals. If kept alone, they will get depressed, stop eating, chew, and pull their furr out, bite OFF their limbs and tail and self mutilate themselves, and pace back and forth in their cage all night and WILL eventually die. I know that seemed a bit scary and I'm definetely not trying to do that, but it is extreamely important that you get two. If you don't want to take my word for anything I say, then PLEASE do research for yourself and you will find out the same things.

Now, sugar gliders can bond at any age and will not just bond to one person. They do make alot of noise and alot of different noises all night long. It doesn't bother me or my wife and we have their cage right beside our bed. Some people, on the other hand, can't sleep beside them and end up putting th cage in the lifing room. I don't know why that other answer said anything about keeping them outside, but I suggest keeping them inside. Sugar gliders are native to Australia and like it warm all the time. Outside, it could be warm, cold, raining, windy, and they may get sick easier. Or a snake could get though their cage and eat them and mice would be attracted to their food. That would just be a stupid decision.

Gliders need a large cage to play and jump around in and these can get pretty expensive for the right size cage, and for this reason, I built my own. A cage for 2 gliders sould be at least 36 inches high, 24 inches wide and 14 inches deep. Some people just use large bird cages. Whichever way you go, it needs to have a pull out tray at the bottom for easier cleaning.

Feeding.
Gliders require a balanced nutritional diet of 50% protein (chiken or other lean meat/beef), 25% FRESH fruits, and 25% FRESH vegetable.
By FRESH, I mean they cannot be canned, they must be fresh or frozen vegetables.
You cannot simply feed them glider pellet food. I keep this in their cage during the day incase they get hungry, but they get a fresh mix of foods every night, and whatever is left uneaten, I take out during the morning.

Gliders can be very sweet pets if you spend the time with them to bond and play. I suggest you get a cheap camping tent and get inside it with them so they will be forced to interact with you and will bond much quicker.

What counts as handling with a sugar glider?

Knat

I got a sugar glider 5 days ago, every day when I get home from work I take her out of her cage, but she just goes into my shirt pocket and falls asleep. I understand i'm supposed to spend 2 hours with her a day. I probably spend about 2 1/2 but 1 1/2 of them she is sleeping in my pocket, the other 1 is when she finally wakes up(around midnight) and starts bouncing off the walls. I usually fall asleep around 12:30-1.
Am I spending enough time with her?

Answer
I always tell people to spend as much time as possible with them on you during the day. My goal is to keep them on me for 4 hours while they sleep in the day. At night, at least an hour of playtime.

In reality, the amount of time you are spending with her is okay, but keep in mind this is another 22 hours of the day she is alone. Some lone gliders do fine, but others can get depressed (as I'm sure you've read).

If you want her to be more interactive with you when she's awake, go to target or walmart and get a $25 kids tent. Take in some toys like feathers and some treats, and since the area is small she'll be interacting with you to play and climb around.

HTH :)

Best spot to pitch a tent?

large screen tents for camping on Camping Tents - PriceGrabber.com
large screen tents for camping image

jdmann4020

I realize it is not that time of year yet, I live in South Dakota! I like to camp out a lot in the summer and I was wondering if you should pitch a tent under a tree or not? I always put my tent under this one tree in my yard, but I find a lot of spiders and other bugs on it. Also, any other bug eliminating tips, where to put my tent, ect. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Under tree is okay if it is not an isolated tree with storms expected or a tree with large a possibly dead limbs that could fall on you in a wind. Entire trees have a way of falling in wind.

Insects are a part of nature. If your tent has screens you should have no problems.

The only bad spot I ever pitched a tent was where there were many small stones. Not good.

Tip: Some Native American friends came to my camp one time and their children advised me on the proper way to set up camp once. I remember they said to be right with the world I should face my tent to the east to greet the morning sun.

When should I line up at best buy for black friday?

skidmark

They have some insane sales this year. I was just wondering when I should get in line. Is 4PM the day before good enough to ensure anything?
The one I'm going to isn't in a HUGE metropolis or anything. But it's not in the middle of nowhere of course.

Answer
At my local Best Buy (Chula Vista, CA), there were already 50 - 60 people in line at noon Thursday. The people at the head of the line were there Wednesday evening - They had tents and camped out overnight. In case you're wondering, Best Buy provided Port-a-Pottys
4:00pm on Thursday is probably too late for the more desirable items. What they do here is hand out tickets for the more desirable items to the people in line at about 8:00pm, with the head of the line first. Showing up at noon probably won't get you a large screen TV.
