What size of camping tent should I choose?

Adela

I am planning a camping trip with two friends. We need to buy a camping tent but I don't know what size of the tent is suitable for three people. I did a little search online and someone said should choose a tent which can accommodate two more person because there must be some space for the camping equipment. Is this true? Is a five man tent a little larger for three?

Answer
A five man tent is just fine. I do a lot of camping and I use a 2-3 person tent for just me, and a 4 person tent when I take the wife and kid along.

Unless your back country camping you can't go wrong with getting a bigger roomier tent.

Tent Camping...State Park/Private...Year Round campers?

AriesAlway

We are wanting to go camping soon...Ive checked online at private and state park campgrounds. How will "year round" campers treat us? It seems the private campgrounds have more socialable things to do, for the kids. But they also seem to have more RV campers, How will everyong be with us tent campers?

Answer
"Year round" campers will treat you just fine as long as you are friendly and courteous to them. Campers, as a whole, are a friendly and helpful group. I can't begin to count the times I have seen complete strangers offer to help put up a tent or dining canopy, give helpful tips on starting a campfire, local sites to visit, etc.

RV campers do not look down on tent campers. Personally, I know tent campers who look down on RVer's!! LOL

You are correct in saying that private campgrounds usually have more socialable things to do: pot luck dinners, game nights, hay rides, and the list goes on and on.

Bed tents: what features to look for?

HisayoA

I'm interested in getting a bed tent for my toddler. When selecting a bed tent for kids are there any particular features which make a big difference? Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Play tent to go on a childrens (twin size) bed, not for a crib.

Answer
Getting the right size tent for the bed, theme (if child has a favorite like mermaid), durability, and does it have a window, velcro or zipper on entrance, are all some of the features to keep in mind. When shopping online I also always read the product reviews.

ALSO: cause i am pretty sure i have seen them in the wal mart stores but they are not online so i was a little worried.
thanks guys.

Answer
These kinds of items like in the picture, including anything with a cartoon character on it, are more of a toy than a serious piece of camping gear. They probably are not weatherproof for one, and I bet they aren't very durable.

But you can get "real" tents that are kid sized for different amounts of money. Here is a youth tent from TexSport

http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-Brookwood-Youth-Dome-Tent/dp/B001C0GWUE/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1269683114&sr=1-14

You can also get an authentic bivy shelter or a backpacker's or bicycler's tent. These are all small, lightweight, and minimalist design so they are easy to carry. They are used by adults with almost no room to spare, but for a child, they would still be pretty cozy, and they are meant for real camping. Note that the term bivy is used to describe both a sleeping bag cover, which you don't really want for this, and a narrow tent. Here is a search result page for those.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dsporting&field-keywords=bivy&x=0&y=0

You also may have some luck with a beach type shelter, including some pop up cabana type things which tend to have a small footprint, since they are used by people in a sitting position. These are meant for real use, but not necessarily camping. Many are meant for shade, but may not be waterproof or durable enough for any sort of campsite other than sand.

Just make sure whatever you get is meant for real use as a camping piece, that is has all the right working parts just like a grownup's, and is meant to be used outdoors instead of being set up in the playroom, etc.

EDIT: Your 13 year old will not fit in any play tent I have ever seen unless she is super small. Even if she did, she is bound to hit a growth spurt any day now. Go with a backpacking tent or a bivy shelter! It will be plenty cozy...this is past the age of toy tents in my opinion. If she is showing interest in camping, get her some real gear and teach her how to do it right!

I'm having difficulty finding info online on how to make a teepee for the living room, like you would a tent using sheets and chairs. I'm sure there is a way to make is quickly and simply using objects around the house, and I finally found something in a search online, but then it said "page not found". I have a few days to do this. Thanks.

The major problem with your request is that chairs are not conducive to tipi shapes -- you need some poles.

But generally speaking, kids are well entertained with sheets or blankets draped over anything into a tent shape. Many an afternoon has been spent under a sheet-draped card table...

but I removed the rods from the tent but cant figure out how to put it away in its little pouch. I googled everywhere for instructions but nothing! Help!

Answer
I haven't seen instructions anywhere online, but there is a great video on Home Shopping Network (HSN) that will show you how to fold and unfold it. It's a little on the long side, but you should get the hang of it after only one watching: http://toys.hsn.com/discovery-kids-pop-up-princess-play-castle_p-6408941_xp.aspx

What are some cool things to do with kids ages 1-3?

I have two little sisters who i babysit all the time. One of my sisters are one.And the other is three.I just can't seem to find enough things in a day for them to do.So basically i would like to know what kids their age would like to do!

Answer
We used to love making forts and tents as little ones. Anything from using blankets and chairs to newspapers or cardboard boxes and stuff. If you roll up newspaper real tight and use a little tape it makes good tent poles. Home made playdough was fun too, there are lots of recipes online. Blowing homemade bubbles. Having an impromptu earth day, picking up garbage in the neighborhood while taking a walk with the wagon or stroller. Going to a park. Free activities in the area, storytime at the library, etc... Listening to music, dancing, making a music video. Make helping out with the housework fun. Google some toddler activities online and you'll probably find lots more!
Good Luck!
