How do you keep the inside of a tent clean when it's snowing?

Jim

When it comes time to set up camp and you've been hiking through the snow all day you're going to be covered in snow. How do you keep the inside of your tent (1-2 person tent) from becoming a sloppy mess when you crawl inside and change into your sleeping clothes?

Answer
I have camped in subzero conditions many times over the decades in the lower 48 and here in Alaska.
First you need pac-boots with a removable insert, many are made with wool felt and the more modern ones use high tech fabrics. This is very important because with the insert you can walk into the vestibule, take off the boots, remove insert and place it in the bottom of your sleeping bag to dry and warm, leaving the boot at the entrance. I keep an extra pair of pac-boot inserts, in case one doesnât dry by the next day.
A pair of military âMickey bootsâ can be worn in the tent while you get things set for the night.
To further lower snow in tent I place a tarp on the ground larger than the tent foot print, extending past the vestibule by 6 feet. I set my tent up and place another tarp over it extending out over everything, leaving the ends open for air flow. This creates an extra vestibule for a âmud/snowâ room where you can brush off your boots and clothing with a hand broom and sweep it outside. This area will stay cold and so the snow wonât melt into a mess. In the tents vestibule I have a heat source to cook or warm up with but not to keep the tent warm all night. If set up right the cold air will flow into the vestibules into the tent and out the back of a tent window. This reduces condensation on the inner walls of moisture and provides fresh air to breathe while providing a place to cook or dry out clothing. I use a propane cook stove for this and so you have to have a flow of air or you can die from lack of oxygen.

How do I camp with no tent?

Colter B

How can I camp using only what I can carry on my back. I have a big wool blanket, a military-grade casualty blanket, a sleeping pad and a ground cloth. Are there any light weight, one man tents that are inexpensive I could use? I am very limited on space dedicated to sleeping arrangements, space and weight are a big issue. I just want something simple, not too big or fancy, that will keep me dry at night. Any ideas? Oh ya, a sleeping bag is too large, this wool blanket I have is warm, big and still light weight and small. I don't have to worry about freezing to death in my area, it doesn't get cold.... we might hit 30F twice in a year. If i get into trouble with the cold, I can just use the casualty blanket. My basic goal is a very small compact tent and directions on hoe to use a pad, ground cloth and blanket in a functional manner.

Answer
An 8x10 tarp and some para-cord will work even in foul weather. I use one alot. Keeps the early morning dew off at the least. Can just go lean-to using a third of it as a ground cloth, or hang it as an awning and get dirty, or make a tube of it when things get real nasty.
You'll want some kind of ground cloth to protect your pad and protect you from ground moisture so you're carrying it anyway.
Go cheap and disposable with visqueen/plastic sheeting, or go top end with light weight silicone impregnated nylon. Keeps your gear dry also if you pack it right. I haven't carried a tent pole in over 5 years.

Ball pits for toddlers?

*Love My T

Does anybody have a ball pit for their toddlers? I just recently saw some online and I think there awesome. I'm thinking about getting one for my girls in a couple of months. I also read alot about people making their own, like with little pools. Just wondering what your thoughts are. If you have one where did you get it. How old is your baby, or how old when they started playing with it? Thoughts... Thanks.

Answer
I have 3 boys. We have had 2 inflatables, they didn't last long with my boys. I got a little round pool at the end of summer, it was 4 dollars. We bought the balls seperately. We also bought some turtle shaped bean bags and have them in there. We do not have a problem with the balls being everywhere. We use a Buzz lightyear pop up tent, that has two entrances, it fits exactly right over the pit. The kids love it. They started with them before 1, around 9 months. They are now 8, almost 4 (next month), and almost 3 (Nov. 1st), they still use it, everyday. All of them. I am not concerned about germs, its their germs. They do not go in with shoes on, and do not eat in the pit. Once every few months we take the pit outside, hose it down, alcohol the pool and spray the balls. We got both our inflatables at Toys R us. One was a fish bowl, the other a little house. The bean bag animals, we have several, pigs, turtles, rabbits, we got those off ebay for 1 dollar each. The sets are of 6. We have 4 sets of turtles, 2 rabbits, 2 pigs. Amazon carries them now, they are expensive now.
http://www.amazon.com/Oriental-Mdse-Sply-Bean-Turtles/dp/B000WYFJTQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1249956455&sr=1-1
these are the turtles

We have 200 balls. We bought 1 ball pack of 100 for 10 dollars.

The pool is great, but a baby under 1 yr, at least mine could not get in and out themselves.

My pits had cost 32.99, and 26.97

The pool pit, the pop up tent was a gift, so nothing, the pool was 4 dollars, we bought 100 balls for 10, then we added the bean bag animals from ebay ascent-education-who hasn't sold in the past 6 months, the beanbags were 48. The other balls were left over from 2 other pits. The beanbags aren't necessary, but they make it more fun. So 14 dollars without the beanbags. Our pit is big, 42", and 8" deep

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8456390
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10761906
this looks like a good one, 24.76, good reviews, it looks a little small, but it says 47" long, that is 4 feet, so if the kids are pretty young, I'd go with something like this, then you can upgrade to a pool later. The balls, 16 dollars for 100, its a fair price, might be able to find better.

How do I keep baby out of the sun at the beach?

Sara S

Now that the baby summer stuff is going up for sale on ebay and local sales, I started thinking about the coming up summer (sigh). My baby is 4 months right now, and I've purchased a rash gaurd and baby sunscreen already, but I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any great products that can help me keep the direct sun and bugs off of him when we go to thebeach this summer (we go alot, and I'm looking forward to getting outside with the baby) Or if you have any hints on bringing a baby to the beach, I'd appreciate them. I've seen little domed screen things that you can zip the baby in, they're kind of like a small play pen, but I think mine will be too big by the summer time.

I know I could get an umbrella, but that's not really doable in my area, they don't allow them on most beaches, and the shaded spots always fill up right away. I'm just thinking about all the new hazards (sand in eyes, sunburn, other kids, ahhhh can't wait)

I appreciate any advice from other parents, I will do a best answer as long as no one says "bring an umbrella" JK

Answer
Can you get a popup shelter? This may sound silly, but they have them for pets. It folds flat but then pops up into a cube. It might take some fiddling but you could cut the fabric on the sides so you can get to him but keep the top intact for shade. They're nylon so they're pretty sand and moisture proof.
Just found one for babies, here's the link to one on eBay so you can see it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Sun-Smarties-Infant-Beach-Cabana-Tent-GREAT-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ120378916326QQihZ002QQcategoryZ117033QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
What do they allow on your beaches? Could you use two chairs and drape a beach towel between them as long as his fingers didn't get pinched.
The only other thing I'd suggest is make sure he keeps a hat on to shade his eyes.
Hope your little guy has fun.

Have your kids taken over your yard?

pdooma

Sandbox, swings, bike, scooters, playhouse, cars, trucks, diggers, balls of every size and sort, holes from mud puddles that needed toes squished in, dead grass circles from swimming pools, soccer/lax goals...the hammock has become a pirate ship and the gazebo a fort.

Answer
seems to me most people without kids don't really use their yards at all. so i'm okay with ours getting lots of use. swingset; ride-on toys; one bush has been converted to a fort and it's amazing it's even still alive; all the trees used as climbing structures; moss dug up for "habitats" for animals; and a giant tent out there at the moment, killing the grass.

my husband does occasionally freak out when his grass gets dug up to make holes. but oh, well.

HELP - Maine Camping Sites?

Lauren

I'm looking to go camping this summer. Somewhere in Southern Maine or New Hampshire. The type of camp site where you bring a tent and stay for a few nights, or even a little cabin to rent.. totally secluded- only I want to have it be somewhere that there are many nature activites to do during the day. For the most part I'd like it to be basically cut off from streets and businesses, etc.
Any ideas?

Answer
Hermit Island is a large campground on the ocean (inlet of a bay actually) in southern Maine that allows tent camping and small pop-ups. It is on its own small island that does not allow anybody but registered campers on it.

http://www.hermitisland.com/

Do you like camping?

Q. What kind of camping and activities while camping do you like?
Are motor homes and the large campers with everything camping or RV-ing?
Shouldn't Yahoo Answers have a camping catagory?

Answer
Its not camping if you dont stay in a tent. We love to camp, just dont leave home without the marshmellows. Nothings better then ghost stories around the camp fire. Look for the jiffy pop popcorn that pops up in the foil pan. Kids like to play tag with flashlights. And Marko-polo in the dark. Waterguns, football, swimming and fishing all are cool. We always take our 4-wheelers, and hike trails, treasure hunts of things you can find along the trails are fun too.

Has anyone had any experience with this tent?
How does it hold up? and also, what are the dimensions of the smaller rooms? Would I be able to fit a queen sized airbed in one of them?

How about this tent? http://www.target.com/Coleman-Family-Dome-Tent/dp/B0006U9PB4/ref=sc_ri_3?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=1KRANA7WBVV0SN6KYJQ5&pf_rd_p=465348991&pf_rd_i=B000W4O8JI&pf_rd_s=bottom-11&pf_rd_m=A1VC38T7YXB528&pf_rd_t=201 Coleman Family Dome Tent

We want one big tent, not several smaller tents.

Answer
The first one gives dimensions and 10 by 18 should be plenty of room for your mattress. They are both decent tents but not top of the line. Coleman products have always been reputable. It is also plenty large for a mattress. One is square and one is more rectangular, so that might be the biggest thing to consider for sleeping arrangements.

Top 10 camping Tent Manufactures in the U.S.?

Mac

Hey, I would just like a list of the top 10 (largest and most successful) camping tent manufacturers (not stores) in the U.S.

-----Then out of that list, could you please the best top few manufactures that are known for making smaller tents for independent campers and hikers.\

Thanks to all in advance!

Answer
At the top of my list is Coleman they are the oldest and most reliable of all the manufactures there are. Not in just tents but for all your camping needs. Unbeatable in price and guarantees. Now there are other great tent makers and gear manufacturers and where they are on any top ten list varies from person too person. Read the reviews of products before you buy and shop and compare. Here is a link to a great supplier with reviews of the products they sell,

http://www.rei.com/

http://www.coleman.com/

@Added-
See what I mean by other opinions? gear heads that think your not getting quality if your paying department store prices. Folks that like BackPacker magazine endorsements are just another group of high-end price fools. Looking at their endorsement lists you won't find any 4 man tents under $100 when Coleman has been selling the top rated Sundome for less then that for years, mind you it is the most copied tent design out there and you can spend upwards of $500 for the same tent design.

How do they do that? by keeping the manufacturing cost down and passing it on to the consumer. Nearly all tents are made overseas in either China or Pakistan it's just that some companies pocket more profit than others. Pay more if you want too but again Coleman cannot be beat price-wise or in quality and guarantee.

sleeping arrangements for kids?

sjr79

I have a two and a half year old boy and a one year old girl the one year old has been sleeping in her crib in our bedroom since she was born but we know she needs to get out and shes is crawling out of her crib. we only have one small bedroom besides ours upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs. whats a good way to get our girl out of our bedroom, they seem to young for bunk beds or to move my son to the basement.

Answer
Let your son and daughter share the upstairs bedroom, near you, for the time being. I would definitely not do bunkbeds yet, nor move them to the basement.

Make the bedroom that they share upstairs for sleeping only, and convert one of the downstairs rooms into a playroom. Thus, when they are upstairs at night or at nap time during the day, they are sleeping and then they are downstairs they are playing.

When they get a bit older, you can move them each to their own room. My oldest two (a girl and a boy) shared a room until they were 9 and 7. There is nothing wrong with such. In fact, I think it helped them bond.

Also, they make crib tents that might help you. It is a mesh dome that fits over the crib, so the child can not crawl out and get injured.

I hope this helps!

Parents: children bedroom decor question...?

Jax's Momm

At what age did you get your child a night stand? My son is 2 and does not have one.

Also, do you have 1 night stand or 2? I have been looking on Craig's List and at estate sales for a set for myself and I am amazed at how most are selling only 1! Do I need to buy new to find a matching set, or is the new thing to only have 1?

Thanks!

Answer
Okay, so when I just had my twins, they had a bunk bed with a tent castle thing under it instead of a bed, so Rosalie(who slept on the bunk bed) didn't have one. She was four. Allyson, Rosalie's twin sister, slept on a twin beside her. She did, but she is more of the book reading girl. Now they are 8 and they both have twin beds with night stand, which they have had since they were four, when the quads were born. The boy quads, have a bunk bed, have one bedside table, on the bottom. On the top, there is a shelf. They have had since they were three. My quad girls both have nightstands on there beds. My kids use one nightstand for their rooms, because they don't need two, and then you can push the bed up against the wall and have more room for them to run around.

A rainy weekend with 2 kids?

AprilSS

I need some ideas on what to do with my 7 year old daughter and my 4 year old stepson this weekend. It's supposed to be storming all weekend and they will be bored and driving us nuts if we don't get them out of the house and do something fun.

We don't have lots of money and it's hard to find stuff that they're both interested in. Any ideas?
Oh, and I live in the St. Louis area

Answer
Libraries can be fun for the right kids - my older two could spend hours there.

Check the local paper - many high schools do performances this time of year and the cost is usually just a few dollars.

Go to the mall to just walk around or have a snack.

Visit a local pet center like PetsMart - my kids love the fish tanks there!

Have a lunch picnic on the floor of a living room, bedroom or somewhere they don't usually eat. Spread out a blanket, pack the lunch, the works.

Make a tent by draping blankets over the dining or kitchen table. Let them use their imagination.

Get some empty boxes, all sizes and let them decorate and use them any way they wish. My kids will ask us to cut doors in them to make 'cars' for their stuffed animals or if they are big, for themselves!

Make a scavenger hunt in the house with prizes.

Bake cookies (always a hit)

Sleeping with a kid with autism?

So basically I am going camping with some friends, my mom made me sleep with all the other guys, we're all 14, and no, none if us are gay, one of them has autism, let's just call him Jerry, my mom is pretty much best friends with his mom, I have no idea how he does it but he sounds and imitate spongebob asleep all night!!! I can't sleep like this! I've argued with my mom and she still doesn't care, last time I went camping and he was there, in our tent, during the night he threw his pillow at me all spongebob giggly, an then I tossed it back to him and accidentally hit his face, he started crying so loud and left the tent waking up the entire campsite... In the morning he kept imitating cats... Over and over!! What do I do when he starts acting up like this? I can't handle this anymore, sometimes he acts drunk and walks around all drunk falling into people...

Answer
Welcome to my world. I share a bedroom with my brothers and 3 have autism spectrum disorder.
Tell him no spongebob noe but if he stops with spongebob you will play spongebob with him later ( and you have to do it). When he imitates cats tell him not now and if he wants to be a cat then a little later.
Use his obsession with spongebob and cats to your advantage. One of my brothers is obsessed with serial killers. We got him to stop talking about it by giving him time to do so, and then no more. You could do the same thing.

Fun party ideas for 14 year old girls?

Michelle T

theres going to be about 10 girls there and its going to be a house party.. i just need some ideas, i have a scavenger hunt, and some other things but just wondering if theres anything else to add.

Answer
Have your guest bring sleeping bags, flashlights, pajamas, fuzzy slippers, etc.

1. Tie a balloon with string around your guest's ankles. On "go" everyone tries to stomp on everyone else's balloon.

2. Give all guests a toothpick to put in between their teeth. They form a line and try to pass a lifesaver or any candy with a hole in it to everyone with using only your toothpick.

3. Put truth and dare cards in a balloon and have guests pick a balloon pop it and answer the truth or do the dare.

4. Play hide and go seek at night

5. Have a silly string war

6. Put a cookie on your forehead and get it to your mouth by using facial expressions only

7. Have one girl be the pointer. She points at one girl to start off a random story then she points to another girl to continue it, and so on

8. Have a girl leave the room while everyone hides in their sleeping bags. The girl comes in and feels the bodies to guess who it is.

8. Have friends bring over board games to play

9. Have an equal pile of m&ms for every girl. One teen starts off by saying I have never... (I have never gone to Hawaii) If it is true for you, eat an m&m. Whoever has the most left wins!

10. Have a bowl of small multicolored candy (like skittles) Have everyone grab 2 candies. If they have the same color you get to eat them. If not you must keep this in your mouth. Round after round you stuff sweets into your mouth until you have 2 of the same color.

11. Play a classic game of truth or dare

12. Watch a movie.

13. Freeze dance

14. Give each other makeovers, BLINDFOLDED!

15. Play "Do You Like Your neighbor?".

16. Paint each other's finger nails.

17. Play hide and go seek in the dark!

18. Rent lots of movies!

19. Treasure hunt in the dark. (have people bring a flashlight to use)

20. Have a dance off... with bubble wrap. Try to pop the most bubbles.

21. Indoor picnic! Pack a basket of goodies, lay out a blanket in the living room, and enjoy a indoor picnic!

22. Tea party! Pull out your finest doll china (if the kids can be trusted with it) and serve hot cider, finger sandwiches, and fancy cookies. As you play you can even teach your guests proper manners for a formal occasion (ediquete).

23.Camp out! Clear some space in the basement, pitch a tent, pull out your sleeping bags, and let the kids sleep inside. (Teddy Bears optional.)

24. To a huge puzzle all together! Put your smarts together to figure it out!

25. Dance! Teach the kids your favorite dance.

26. Test Your Taste Buds! Have one person make something from ingredients in the kitchen and then other person has to put on a blindfold and eats the food. The person with the blindfold on then makes a guess at what the food is or what ingredients are in it.

27. Drama Bag Game - Fill shopping bags with 5 different items in each bag. A shoe, hat, party favor etc. - but fill each bag with different things. Divide into teams and give each team one bag. Go to different rooms and create a skit which includes all items in the bag. After 15 minutes come back and perform. Variation: Create a song or commercial.

28. Play Maufia.

29. Talk! Late Nights are a good time for friends to just get together and talk too!

30. HAVE FUN!!!!!!

For dinner have a "Mystery Meal". Give each guest a menu, but have the items coded like Dr.Pepper is Physicians spice. It is funny to see your friends so confused! Here are some more ideas:
âNeptune's Tridentâ (fork)
âPucker Upâ (lemonade)
"Shovel" (spoon)
"Finger Puppets" (olives)
"Early Morning Alarm" (chicken)
"Gold nuggets" Clue- Pocahontace (corn)

Slumber Party Menu

Pizza - take out or have more fun making your own with fun toppings.
Chips and dip
Veggie tray with dip
Fruit tray with dip
Make Rice Krispie Treats, Brownies or Cookies at midnight
Fondue
Hot Chocolate
Sleepover Smores
Smoothies

1. You can have maybe a mini "spa" by doing each other's nails and hair.
2. Bake cookies.
3. Watch a movie
4. Make pizza
5. Play boardgames like Monopoly or Trouble
6. Experiment with makeup.

Flower Girl Stories?

Q. My friends and I were talking one day at lunch about flower girl stories. It seemed that all of us had something to say about our past experiences as a flower girl. Do you guys have some "lol moments" as a flower girl? I would tell you mine, but i dont think i have enough space... :P

Answer
I was a flower girl with my sister. We were really good kids growing up so we never did anything too crazy, but there was another little girl who was a flower girl with us at my aunts fisrt wedding. It was a catholic ceremony so she had the big, gorgeous white dress with the HUGE train. The little girl crawled under my aunts dress and yelled "wow, its like a tent in here!!!" then she popped out and pulled the ring bearer in with her. My poor aunt!!

Please answer! 10 points! How to decorate pj's and camp tent in a pirate theme?

OH NOES. M

I need to know how to decorate a regular tent (like for camping) in pirates, Like how to make it look like a pirate ship inside and out.

Also, I need to know how to make pajamas look like a pirate outfit. Please be creative and unique, im looking for detailed answers!

This includes creative props (like a parrot) for the pajamas and tent.

10 POINTS TO THE MOST CREATIVE AND UNIQUE ANSWER!!

Answer
ok first... the pajamas.
this may sound weird, but i think it could really work out in the end.
find a pair of brown or maroon/brick red gauchos. or any kind of loose fitting knee length shorts.
you can make this a craft or do it yourself... but cut out long skinny triangles at the bottoms of each leg so they look ragged and worn down.
then you can get any long sleeved white shirt and cut a V at the top... then put some little holes on each side and find brown yarn or a shoelace and tie it back up. put it on with an undershirt underneath it and roll up the sleeves.
now you can make a belt out of house hold items [maybe even a real belt...] and find cheap hats, vests and swords at any costume shop or thrift store.
let the kids run around in their little outfits and once its time for bed they can sleep either in the long sleeve shirt or the undershirt with the gauchos. everything will be made out of cotton so it wouldnt be uncomfortable at all. especially the pants... they are commmfy :]
and the whole outfit can also easily be done by children so that will take a good hour or so for arts and crafts.
overall, the costume will be simple to make but resemble this: http://www.buypiratecostumes.com/yarn_baby_pirate_captain_costume.html

now the tent.
heres an idea: if you use the costume as arts and crafts you can have someone else direct it while you make the tent. so when the kids first get there, all they see is a regular tent. but once they transform into pirates they'll go back outside and it will "magically" become a ship. surprise always hypes up children.
first off you can put the tent on a bunch of blue streamers and have the entrance to the tent have a piece of wood or colored piece of paper sticking out of it [or from underneath it]. so you have an ocean and a "walking plank".
for the outside you can just measure the sides and cut out big sheets of brown paper that you can just tape to the outside. you can decorate the paper ahead of time with wood markings and other cutouts of pirates and maidens and a tower... then tape or glue it on later.
a good thing to do would be to find some REAL paddles and lean them up against the side of the "ship".
at the back of the tent you can put a pole or a broom handle sticking up out of the ground and tie a sheet to it. voila! we have sails!
maybe build a homemade cannon.
anything else on the outside can be your choice.... those are just the basics.
now the inside.
you can get like 10 or 20 sheets of yellow or gold paper and just wad them up in balls and put them in a shoebox or old chest and that can be a little treasure decoration. there can be parrot beanie babies everywhere and some eye patches scattered on the floor. if you want to you can find red or brown bean bags for comfort and give them little bottles of root beer or coke and they can pretend they're pirates drinking rum. unless thats a bit too racy.
you can have a telescope in there somewhere too and some skulls or whole skeletons.

urmmm thats about all i can think of... i hope this helps.
good luck!!
