What to do with Toddler at Disney World?

mstaffy82

My sister is taking me and my 2 and a half year old to Walt Disney World in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone knew of any cool places to go with a younger child. She is VERY well behaved and easy to handle. Just was wondering as I have never been. So excited!
I am going to let her choose, it's just we have 7 days and was wondering if there was any " you have to do it" type activities.

Answer
EVERYTHING. I just took my niece for her first trip; she's 3 months old. She loved everything. My sister carried her in a Baby Bjorn and she rode everything without a height requirement. I went for my first time at 8 months old. Some rides have gun pops and that sort of thing, but my niece has always loved loud noises.

Make sure you visit the Princesses and Fairies tent in Mickey's Toon Town at MK. Almost all of the rides do not have a height requirement, and those are defiantly ones to hit. Lots of kids like Pooh's ride, Dumbo and Peter Pan in Magic Kingdom, but I suggest trying it all. Let her pick, but don't think it'll be "too scary" for her. Disney was MADE for the children and the young at heart. Speaking of scary? Haunted Mansion is a lot of fun! It's my first memory of Disney World.

Epcot doesn't have many rides, but they have this awesome Kim Possible attraction. At 2 years, I'm not sure how much she knows of Kim, but it's quite fun. It's an interactive scavenger hunt! Give it a try.

Hollywood Studios has Toy Story Mania... a complete must ride.

And Animal Kingdom has great musicals and a safari! =J

Essentially, have lots of fun, let her have fun, and don't miss out on the parades, fireworks...everything! Enjoy your trip!

but I removed the rods from the tent but cant figure out how to put it away in its little pouch. I googled everywhere for instructions but nothing! Help!

Answer
I haven't seen instructions anywhere online, but there is a great video on Home Shopping Network (HSN) that will show you how to fold and unfold it. It's a little on the long side, but you should get the hang of it after only one watching: http://toys.hsn.com/discovery-kids-pop-up-princess-play-castle_p-6408941_xp.aspx

How old should my daughter be to go camping?

Girl due 4

and by camping I mean minimum impact, in the woods, in a tent cooking over a fire camping. (yes, I know a fire is not as good for minimum impact as a dutch oven). I am really big into camping and have been doing it for year and I can't wait to share the joys of it with my daughter, but how old should she be before I take her?

Answer
I began camping with my parents when I was 5 and my sister was 2. It started a life-long love of being in the outdoors. I know people who take babies too young to walk on low-impact backpacking trips. After all, our ancestors as children survived for centuries living in tents and huts and running free in forests and meadows and millions still do around the world. They are far safer in the wilderness than among the chemical poisons, steep stairs and sharp objects and edges of the average home. I find the wonder and delight that small children bring to their discovery of the natural world enhances the experience of the older folks around them -- usually they are happier campers than older kids who gripe about missing their TV shows, video games and cell phones.

The one clear danger to small children is open fire. Besides, if you are truly a low-impact camper you will forgo the fire and cook on a backpacking stove with butane, propane or white gas fuel. Small children tend to wear themselves out on camping trips and are sound asleep in the tents long before the after-dark fire can be built up anyway. And they rarely have patience for the long time it takes to cook on a fire. Better to scramble some eggs or make a grilled cheese sandwich, soup or oatmeal for them in a few minutes on a Coleman Peak One or Camping Gaz burner.

What do you think about having a camp out indoors for a toddler playdate?

What kind of things could we do for the camp out? What kind of snacks could I serve?

Answer
Hot dogs on skewers,(make sure the ends are not sharp), s'mores, monster cookies, chips, marshmallows anything else that you would eat on a camp out. You could set up a mini indoor tent, we have one w/ a tee pee and two tunnels that kids climb thru. Get a cheap plastic set of fishing poles and pretend to fish. Lay out sleeping bags, tell bedtime stories. You are only limited by your imagination. Good luck and have fun!!

What is your baby of approximately one year of age, give or take a few months getting for Christmas?

f'it

i want a toy that my son will actually use lol, because it seems he's only interested in things that he shouldnt have. he will be 14 mths Jan 1st and i was wondering what are some toys he would actually play with?
and what other things have you gotten your 1 year old?

Answer
for my son we got him a rocking horse, some clothes, a puppet, a 'big boy' toothbrush (soft bristled one that's not a finger brush) and various other little things...stacking cups, a booboo bunny, some pjs. we didn't get too much for him because everyone else is getting him a billion things. my relatives have gotten him, so far for christmas, a little mini arm chair from pottery barn kids, a push toy/ride on scooter thing, blocks, a duck that you push along that quacks, a little people car/tunnel thing, a sorting toy, a busy cube, and more things I cannot even think of. when we were thinking about what to get him, I was thinking some sort of musical instrument thing would be cool (melissa and doug makes a good set), books, cars, or a kitchen set (mine is too young for this now, maybe next year though). they make tunnels with tents attached to them, ball pits, and little slides that can go indoors and outdoors, if you've got the space. I don't know if yours likes elmo either, but the elmo live is so neat and even though I don't like noisy toys particularly, my son saw this in the store and lit right up. he loved it, we might get it for him for his birthday.

my son is 10.5 months right now but I've been trying to look for things that will last him until his 2nd birthday. a lot of the toys we're getting say 18+ months on them so he'll be a little young to use them when he gets them and he'll need some help with them but he'll grow into them (and he's got plenty of stuff to last until then). right now he's got a plastic chair cube thing that he loves that he can sit in and a leapfrog learn and groove table that he plays with all the time (I got it recommended to me on here after a woman said her 2 year old still plays with it).

they also make little crayons that have a plastic ball around them so little babies can grab on to them, maybe he might enjoy that?

hope I helped!

What should I consider when purchasing a winter camping tent?

large camping tents on Person Tent Large Family Camping Tents Outdoor Camp Cabin 2 Room ...

Anita

I am planning my first winter camping and I need to purchase a winter camping tent. What should I consider when buying it?

Answer
Freestanding
Choose a freestanding or dome tent that needs few or no ropes or tent stakes for support. Tent stakes are easily lost, and staking out a tent in the snow can be difficult. A freestanding tent allows you to be flexible with location while still feeling secure in the tentâs structure. Keep in mind, however, that a freestanding tent is easily tossed in windy conditions but can be weighted down with gear on the inside or rocks on the outside.

Support
Four-season tents are designed with snow load in mind and have sturdy, strong support poles. Avoid tents with large, unsupported, low-angled areas that can accumulate snow and possibly cause the tent to collapse.

Size
Choose a tent that's rated for one more person than will actually be using the tent. The additional space will come in handy for bulkier cold-weather sleeping bags and extra winter gear. In addition, harsh weather can force campers indoors more often in the winter, and the extra space can help campers pass the time more comfortably. Furthermore, you may want to consider a tent with a vestibule area where you can leave snow-covered boots or cook inside when necessary.

How to repair a canvas camping tent?

Ivy

I noticed there is a tear in my canvas camping tent. Can it be fixed? How to do that?

Answer
1. Sew the sides of the damaged area together. This is similar to sewing clothing, except that thick canvas may require a large needle or awl and heavy duty or waxed string. These materials are available at outdoor specialty stores.

2. Spread seam sealer or beeswax to the sewn seam. This product is available at outdoor and camping specialty stores, and can vary depending on the make of your tent (canvas or nylon). Follow all product instructions and warnings for proper application details, including drying time.

3. Line up one of the patches so that it is centered with the inside area of the tear. The patch should be larger than the damaged area on all sides by at least 2 inches. Secure the patch with glue, which can also vary depending on the make of your tent. Follow product instructions for drying time; be sure the adhesive is completely dry before continuing.

4. Sew the patch into place to fully secure it. Using adhesive and stitches will help prevent the tear from spreading or from opening again.

5. Spread seam sealer or wax over the sewn seams and the edges of the patch for optimal protection.

6. Line up, glue and sew the other patch to the outside of the tear. Be sure that it lines up with the inner patch, as the two should be the same size. Apply sealer or wax to the seams and the edges of the patch.

I am pleased to hear that South Korea is so happy with their development model but Sri Lanka's development model is different and I do not believe that it will take 60 years for us to reach a 20K median income. South Korea as every sovereign nation has its own limits but they differ greatly with those of Sri Lanka. I truly enjoy the warm and gracious hospitality of your peoples from both the north and south when I have visited and find that your security forces are very well behaved and maintained. But we are not interested in becoming a little Japan though Japan also has its own charms but admittedly South Korea and North Korea would have been on a much quicker economic development trajectory if not for Japan. We are not so interested in back ending a stream when we are the gateway to the Orient. A few world wars does not change the history of our countries and we always look forward to occasional visits from our distant neighbors but our tropical perspective and cultural ties predicate much of what our growth and development streams are, have been and will continue to be. We will never a large chemical manufacturor for we are more environmentally concerned, we chose when and who develops hospitality on our island for we try to limit those things that conflict with the great and vast spiritual nature of our island. Ship building is not a stream that we need to proceed with in the short term for their are other matters that take precedence and we are well on the way to IT development, We are much more focused on clean industry such as assembly rather than dirty industries such as manufacture. We believe in saving our carbon credits and can possibly offer some for sale as that would be much more along the lines of our future view than creating large carbon expenditures. We would never erode the monuments of our culture and civilization as we have a preservationist mentality.

Rudukumar should understand that at the end of the year means at the end of 365 days of no violence, no lies and conjecture in the media, no economic terrorism, no fraud, no drug dealing, no arms running, no Selveraj Pathamathan. That year does not begin until the Tamil diaspora SINCERELY apologizes for 30+ years of terror and havoc wreaked on Sri Lanka through diaspora and foreign elements. It also means turning in for prosecution ALL parties that have been conducting such either at home or abroad. The Tamil diaspora is nowhere near step one. I suggest that these terrorists find another country to accomodate them because the Tamils that were born and live in Sri Lanka are Sri Lankans first and foremost. The most that you can attempt is to speak for 800,000 people who collectively terrorised every community including their own at home and abroad. That is not much to stand for so I suggest that you revise your LTTE leanings and give up KP, Castro et al. You are the discriminators not us

wow, you did such a great job selling Sri Lanka im thinking of going there on vacation.

Please recommend an 8 or 10 person family tent for us!?

I am heartbroken. I was going to order the Columbia Cougar Flats 2 and now it has been discontinued.

Can anyone recommend a tent that would be big enough for me, my husband who is 6'4 tall, and 3 children? My youngest will be sleeping in a pack and play.

Would like a bathtub floor, good ventilation. A canopy over the front door would be a great bonus. I like the idea of divided rooms.

We are not camping anywhere very cold.. but would need something that will stand up to rain.

Thank you.

Answer
My current family tent would satisfy all of those preferences with the exception of the canopy over the door. However, the lacking canopy has proven to only be a problem when going in and out while it is actually raining, and...really...how much are you going to actually do that?

The straight vertical walls allow for more usable floorspace (especially for things like a pack-n-play), it has a hanging divider, and even two doors. The doors are excellent for camping with kids because they are a hard D-frame with a hinge and velcro, so the kids can easily go in and out without having to zip/unzip/zip/unzip. You can zip up the doors when you want/need to, but you don't have to do it every time.

Big windows on three sides and doors on the fourth side have rather large windows as well. The entire top is mesh. I've never had a problem in the wind and/or rain in this tent.

The tent is very tall (I'm 6'3" so that's a requirement for me as well), and hands-down the easiest tent to setup that I have ever owned. Not exaggering when I say that I can easily setup this tent in 15 minutes by myself, including all guylines. It's also just as easy to break down, and it's the only tent I've owned that actually folds up SMALLER than it came from the store, so you can actually fit additional accessories in the original storage bag in addition to the tent.

It's made by Coleman but only sold in Target stores. If there's not a store near you, they usually offer free shipping on something priced that high. I've seen it on sale as cheap as $150, but it's usually $185-200.

This summer we plan on doing a lot of camping. We have property that is close to a state park, but mostly we will be sticking around on our property. We'll be using tents, no running water, etc. The real thing. So, any suggestions on what to do? I think I'll be bringing along the Pack 'N Play as well for my little one. One will be 1 in June, the other turned 2 this past March.

Answer
What a great age to introduce them to camping. My two younger kids have been camping since they were at least six months old and the tent is a second home to them when we are on the road.

Definitely bring the Pack'N Play and the mosquito netting. It works for containment and for naps under a shady tree.

Sunscreen and repellent are also a must.

As far as activities, almost anything they play with at home that you can fit in your vehicle will work just as well for them outdoors. Bubbles are good, blocks, balls, sorting toys, magnet boards, Duplos, and other favorite toys (the Fisher Price Ball Popper toy....hours of fun..even for us adults!). Rotate a few toys in and out of a screen house and you have an instant playroom.

What is the best earthquake emergency kit to buy?

tylertyler

Looking for a good comprehensive kit to buy in case of emergency- in this case earthquake. Would like a kit that has EVERYTHING I need.

Answer
You do not BUY a comprehensive emergency kit, you MAKE one yourself.

I looked at questions you have previously answered, to see where you live. Looks like you live in California.

Since you live in an earthquake zone, with a LARGE population, you should be prepared to care for yourself with zero outside help for a one month minimum. That means your water, food, fuel, transportation, medicine, sanitary and a way to protect all of your supplies for a one month period of time.

Think I'm kidding? Look at Haiti, or New Orleans, or anyplace else hard hit by a natural disaster. Would a three day kit do the job? Or do you think it's going to take an entire month before there are enough roads cleared, and supplies brought in to make a difference?

You probably don't have the space to store an entire months worth of water. Besides, it weighs a lot (you probably live in an apartment). Buy a Big Berkey, so you can filter your own water. Even water out of a ditch would be safe to drink after being filtered through a Big Berkey.

Go to Ready Made Resources for the best price on Big Berkeys.
Link:
http://www.readymaderesources.com/

Water is your number one concern. You could go an entire month without eating, and survive. Water is first and foremost.

Take any prescription medications? That includes eye glasses, or contacts. You need to keep at least a month supply on hand at all times if they are important to maintain life (heart, blood pressure, diabetic, epileptic, ect). Do you wear contacts? Get extra eye glasses with your Rx. It will be unsafe to wear contacts after an earthquake due to all the dust.

Go to Zenni Optical for extremely inexpensive (but good quality) prescription eyeglasses. They are as inexpensive as $8.
Link:
http://zennioptical.com/cart/home.php

Buy several wool blankets. Wool blankets retain 80% of their heat holding abilities, even if they are soaking wet. You can use a wool blanket to put someone on fire out. Synthetics just melt to the body if used to wrap someone on fire in.

Link to where I buy wool blankets:
http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com/product/olive-drab-us-70-virgin-wool-blanket-4842.cfm

Stock up on canned foords, enough to last you an entire month. That is 90 meals. Remember the water used in canned foods is perfectly safe to drink, and adds to your water supply. Most canned foods do not have to be cooked, and are safe to eat right from the can. This eliminates fire danger, especially important those first few days when all the gas leaks will not yet be shut off. Peanut butter, crackers, jelly, hard candies, powdered juice mix, powdered milk, and those sort of items are also good to have on hand. Don't forget extra can openers.

Have copies of all of your important documents, like insurance, credit card info, social security, mortgage, birth certificate, ect. Some people like to make a CD of those papers. Great idea...if you can get to a working computer to print out, and prove who you are. However in the aftermath of an earthquake that may be a problem.

A really good bike, with outstanding tires, that have tubes, and a patch kit. Remember there will be glass and rubble everywhere to puncture the tires. A bike may be the only way to navigate about, cars and motorcycles will be too big.

Good leather gloves, and good boots, with ankle support, and thick soles. You do not want to puncture your foot at a time like that.

A tent large enough for you, and your supplies. Remember a tent can be set up inside a house if it's still safe to be in the building. The tent will help keep you warm, and the bugs from bitting you, if all the windows fell out of your home.

Sanitation. You cannot count on a flush toilet. Five gallon buckets, with lids. Line the bucket with contractor grade plastic bags (those are extra thick). You can even set a plastic toilet seat on top of the bucket. Throw baking soda on top, after you use, to help keep the smell down. Keep the toilet covered at all times when not in use. This keeps smell down, and keeps flies out. Remember flies will not be transfering diseases, like Hepititis from open sewage. Enough TP to last you at least a month.

First aid supplies. Wound will be extremely common. Have rubber or latex gloves to protect yourself against HIV, AIDS, Hepititis, or other blood born diseases. Women's Kotex make extremely good bandaging material for wounds loosing a lot of blood. I saved the life of one of my horses, when she cut open an artery on her leg and was spurting blood 20 feet out. It was during a howling blizzard, and the Vetrinarian could not get to the farm. Women's Kotex, and pressure bandages (like ace wraps) stopped the bleeding, and saved the mares life.

Light source. I sugest the LED flashlights that go on your head. Yes, they look dorky. Dorky means nothing when it gives you two free hands. I also sugest other types of LED flashlights. Smoke detector. Even if you are inside a tent, take one with you. People are idiots and always setting things on fire after earthquakes as they light candles and fire up grills.

Battery/wind up/solar radio, so you can listen to news reports.
Here's the link to where I got mine:
www.emergencyessentials.com

You can browse through any of the web sites I've given to you, and get an idea of the kind of items you should have on hand.

I have personally purchased from every company I gave you a link to.

Mine changes from time to time. Right now, it's sliding on my cousins' Slippery Slide in the summer, cause I'm so hot and a slippery slide would be welcome at this point.
@ Lolly: Awww! :D That's an adorable story! Lol! Sweet :) Kids, huh? Once, when I was 3 years old, I was with my parents and sister shopping for clothes and my mother wouldn't get me something I wanted, so I hid amongst long dresses in a clothing rack and fell asleep, and the store had to be shut down because everyone had thought I'd gone missing, lol.

Got Many , but probly when i was Really really little i use to run away from my parents and sisters and they would try to catch me but i was so fast they couldn't i would swerve right between them lol but then my big couson would always be able to catch me he'd come out sometimes right as they were chasing me.

Where is the place Resort in Orlando to stay?

1life

Answer
Are you talking about Disney resorts?
If so, these are my top 10.

#10: Port Orleans Riverside â Riverside, along with the other moderate resorts are ok for kids, but honestly, are better for adults without kids. They are quiet and decent resorts, but not anything overly fun or stimulating for kids. Riverside is the one exception, as they have a very fun pool, a cool boat you can ride to Downtown Disney along with the coolest thing, old time bamboo fishing poles you can rent and fish in the river. Riverside is a great resorts as well if you have three kids, as many of the rooms will sleep 5, the only moderate resort that has this amenity.

#9: Pop Century â While Pop Century, and the #8 All-Stars, were built for kids and families, they really arenât the best resorts for kids. The pools do not have slides, and the resorts tend to get pretty crowded and often loud. Granted, Pop Century is well thought out and it is a fun resort. It has several big pools and a great arcade and food court, and plenty of Disney magic.

#8: All-Stars â While technically I would put All-Star Movies here at #8, in reality, the All-Stars are basically identical with only their theme separating the resorts. These resorts are similar to Pop Century, in not having a slide at the pools, but they have fun themes that kids seem to love. Whether your kids are into Sports, music or Disney Movies, you can find something at one of these resorts to make your kids happy.

#7: Disneyâs Fort Wilderness - Fort Wilderness offers both camping spots for tents, trailers and RVs as well as cool Wilderness Cabins. Kids love camping, and if you donât want to rough it, the cabins are a great answer. Fort Wilderness has fun activities from campfires at night to hay rides and golf carts you can rent. A fun resort to spend time at for kids and adults.

#6: Polynesian â The Polynesian has many great attractions for kids, a great pool with ultra cool volcano slide, a beach, the monorail and a great view of the Magic Kingdom. The rooms are fun, and you really get into the feel of the Polynesian, especially at night, with the tiki torches. Plus, all kids love sitting on the beach and watching the water parade at night.

#5: Boardwalk Inn â Disneyâs Boardwalk Inn is a great kids resort, with a fantastic roller coaster water slide at the pool, a great location near Epcot and Disneyâs Hollywood Studios and the Boardwalk right out your door. Not only are there great restaurants on the Boardwalk, including the ESPN Zone, but you can also rent surrey bikes and hang out and watch the buskers, where are a blast.

#4: Wilderness Lodge â The Wilderness Lodge is a great resort for kids, with a fun, swimming hole type pool, great courtyard area and one of the funnest restaurants in Disney, Whispering Canyon Cafe. Plus, there is a great boat ride over to the Magic Kingdom available if you wish. Also, you can get a room with bunk beds, which always seems to solve a few fights over sharing a bed between the kids. Now, you just have to deal with the fight over who gets to sleep on the top bunk.

#3: Beach Club/Yacht Club â While technically the Beach and Yacht Club are separate resorts, in most cases, they really are only one resort. The Beach Club and Yacht Club have the best pool by far at WDW, Stormalong Bay. In addition to the great water slide, this sand bottom pool has a lazy river, a whirlpool and many other fun places to explore. Kind of like having your own water park outside your hotel room. Plus, the Yacht and Beach Club is right next to Epcot, and not far from the Boardwalk and Disneyâs Hollywood Studio.

#2: Contemporary â there is just something magical about the Contemporary for kids. I donât know if it is the monorail running through the lobby every few minutes, or the great views of the Magic Kingdom from the room, or the kids pool that is out in Bay Lake. The rooms are fun, just having been totally redone, and have nice balconies where kids can hang out and watch the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom. Plus, it is only a 5 minute walk over the Magic Kingdom if you donât want to wait for the monorail, the only resort you can walk to the Magic Kingdom from.

#1: Animal Kingdom Lodge - Well, kind of a no brainer for me. The Animal Kingdom Lodge is my kids favorite resort, and that holds true for most kids I have ever asked. With rooms right on savannas, kids can sit and watch the animals for hours from their rooms. Plus, there is a great pool with super fun water slide and you can even see animals from the pool area. Just a great place for kids to stay, they never seem to complain when you are leaving the parks to head back to the resort.

Ideas to keep a kid playing actively when you are unable to participate?

I'm sorry, I meant outside. running around ,playing ball, things like that.

Answer
This is one of the hardest. my best advice from experience is having at least 5 toys/activities that only come out during a time when you can't play actively with the child, this makes it new and exciting, create.buy new ones every 12 months, and really only use them wisely like when you are really busy (like during the tax season!)

For my 6 year old I have

(1) Lego Starwars for the Xbox, Oblivion and Guitar Hero
(2) A plastic bin of building matterials, including themed legos, pieces of wood, Lincoln logs, old sheets, a small tent and thumb tacs
(3) A Ukuleleh (sorry I can't spell that but it's a little Hawaiian Guitar)
(4) A plastic bin of Assorted family photos, a really old cheap digital camera, and camera/photo printer (when I bring this out he walks around the front of the house and takes "Nature photos" and prints them out, he also scrapbooks them.
(5) My old toys from my childhood (plastic bin of cabbage patch dolls, GI joe's, Surf action figures, a light bright, Gem VHS tapes, and a DVD set of Heman

one of the rules that I have is only one activity comes out a day and I only uses these nifty tools about 1 or 2 times a month. I usually use these tools when I have to get some work done (i'm a writer from home) or when i'm doing something like Taxes

Edit: OH! that's easier! outside stuff is always fun and cheaper then the inside activities.
My oldest likes these 4 things

1. I bought him a kite
2. BALLS! he loves to play with balls of all kinds
3. Gardening, have your kids start a garden, it keeps them active, and they have the pride of knowing they worked hard, and planted veggies or flowers!
4. Side Walk chalk!

How to decorate for a backyard summer camp party?

Q. My 3 year old daughter is having a camp theme party and want to decorate so you really feel like you are camping

Answer
Make a large wooden sign at the entrance to the "Camp Site" and have other signs pointing the way to the toilets and showers, picnic area and wildlife trail.
Set the tents around a central seating area with the campfire as a centerpiece. Lay out low benches for sitting on or just use mats or planks of wood balanced on rocks.
Decorate the inside of the tents with streamers and balloons
Around the edges of the camp, erect some citronella torches. These will keep the bugs away and add to the camp atmosphere.
Place cuddly toys in the tress and bushes for the younger kids to discover or for the older kids, hang plastic bugs around the camp. Use glow in the dark bugs and stars which will be fun later on when it gets dark.
Hang multi colored Chinese lanterns around the garden. Some kids just can't help playing with candles so be careful where you place them.
Set up a food table and cover with green or camouflage cloth. Use plastic tableware or tin plates and cups. Provide bug stickers for each child to personalize his/her own plate and mug. It saves muddling them up.
You can also add:
Bug stickers and tattoes
T-shirts with the name of the camp and date of the birthday camping party

What affordable two-man tent and sleeping bag is the best buy!?

I need to buy a compact, lightweight tent for a cycling holiday in France. Can anyone recommend something relatively cheap (under £75) and a decent sleeping bag? Thanks

Answer
I highly recommend this ...
Coleman 2008 SunDome 7-Foot by 7-Foot 3-Person Dome Tent
http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-SunDome-7-Foot-3-Person-Orange/dp/B001C1A362/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1248165586&sr=1-1&tag=aor-sale-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957

This past weekend was my first experience with this tent - a simply awesome performer for under [...] bucks. I sealed the seams on the rainfly the day before and upgraded the tent stakes all for an additional $[...]. Set-up was a breeze and took under 10 minutes (I placed a tarp down below). Good thing, because the rain came 5 minutes later in buckets and lasted all night. The tent held up like a champ with no leakage what so ever. The size was just perfect for two adults and a few gear bags (or a kid). Highly recommended!

Coleman Ash Canyon 25-Degree Rectangular Oversize Sleeping Bag
http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-25-Degree-Rectangular-Oversize-Sleeping/dp/B0009PUQ28/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1248166146&sr=1-9&tag=aor-sale-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957

This a nice and comfortable sleeping bag. The zipper works nicely and it is a very nice and roomy sleeping bag. It rolls up nice and fairly compact compared to my old one. I am very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone interested in buying a sleeping bag.

How many of you have slumber parties of camp-outs with your kids?

They ca

Every couple of weeks, my daughters and I will set up a tent in our living room and have a "camp-out." I'll make smores and hotdogs to eat and tell them stories. We also have sleepovers. For our sleepovers, we pull some sleeping bags into the living room, order pizza, bake cookies and watch a movie together. My kids are only 1 1/2 and 2 1/2. Their dad thinks it weird because we do this at home. I think it's fun for them. I remember my mom doing things like this when I was younger. How many of you do silly things like this for your kids?

Answer
I do fun things all the time. When one of us can't sleep and we don't have work or school the next day, we wake the other up and ask if they want a midnight party. We tell gohst stories on a normal night at home as if we are cmaping. We sleep on the hyda bed when we have movie nights. and we play silly games... tonight we played .... 'you smell like'... We took a big sniff of the other person and said what they smell like... it is silly. but when your kid laughs becuase you met them on their level that is cool. You husband may think it's silly, just tell him that kids like silly and he shouldn't crtisize you and he should try getting down to their level. You are making memories

My sister, her kids and I are driving from AZ to Anaheim to go to Disneyland but we don't have the money to stay in a hotel and we don't have an RV. Where is the best place to go tent camping in Anaheim/surrounding LA area?

Answer
Actual Tent Camping is going to really be limited to just a few State Beaches/Park. The closest is Crystal Cove in Newport Beach. The cost is still going to be in the $50/night price range which for just a few dollars more you can get a budget Motel closer to Disneyland.

If you do decide to camp here, they tend to book up 2-6 weeks in advance weeks in advance depending on when you are going. So it is best to book as soon as possible unless you want to hope for a cancellation.

What are some good camping areas close to San Francisco?

wicket_wm

We are flying into San Francisco in the middle of May to go camping. We would like either beach access, or redwoods, or both would be great. Something within 3 hours of San Fran where we could rent a cabin (we will consider tent camping but flying with all the gear would be difficult). We will have a 3 year old with us so something kid friendly with rangers/security of some kind is needed. Right now we are mostly looking at Big Basin, but we are searching for other options as well. Any suggestions?

Answer
You might want to look into a KOA Cabin. They have several locations throughout the state.
Since you were thinking about Big Basin here is a link to the one in Santa Cruz County.

What do you think about having a camp out indoors for a toddler playdate?

momoftwo

What kind of things could we do for the camp out? What kind of snacks could I serve?

Answer
Hot dogs on skewers,(make sure the ends are not sharp), s'mores, monster cookies, chips, marshmallows anything else that you would eat on a camp out. You could set up a mini indoor tent, we have one w/ a tee pee and two tunnels that kids climb thru. Get a cheap plastic set of fishing poles and pretend to fish. Lay out sleeping bags, tell bedtime stories. You are only limited by your imagination. Good luck and have fun!!

but I removed the rods from the tent but cant figure out how to put it away in its little pouch. I googled everywhere for instructions but nothing! Help!

Answer
I haven't seen instructions anywhere online, but there is a great video on Home Shopping Network (HSN) that will show you how to fold and unfold it. It's a little on the long side, but you should get the hang of it after only one watching: http://toys.hsn.com/discovery-kids-pop-up-princess-play-castle_p-6408941_xp.aspx

how do I setup a play area for my 3 year old son in a 1 bedroom apartment?

I have moved from a single family home to a 1 bedroom apartment. My son used to have his own toy room. Now the only place I have for him is the dining area. We dont use a dining table so we decided to use that area as his toy / play area. Any ideas on how I can organize that area so that I can make it his play area ?

Answer
Ikea has great kids organizational tubs and shelving. Not expensive, and a good way to keep order. A cheapy solution is to buy a collasable kids tent for him to play in.

when i cover my grass at my house with anything for like 10 minutes, the grass dies, yet at a ballgame, the grass is fine. why?

Answer
You have an ultra-sensitive lawn.
At the ballpark they only leave the tarp on while it's raining.
My kids had a tent with canvass floor up on my lawn for three days and nights and the grass still survived.

How much would this type of house setup cost?

FredBaguet

OK, this is going to sound really kind of weird, but here goesâ¦
I've always had a "dream house" since I was very little. With my weird upbringing, I've developed a bunch of personality quirks that I would want incorporated into this house. Now at this stage in my life, it's time for me to get a house. I'm thinking about custom building one, you'll see why.
Here are the specifications.
First, I'm assuming I'm having a family in this house, although it just might be two. But I'm preparing for up to 5 people, I guess.
The most important thing is for there not to be many small creatures around. Yeah, this sounds weird, but I just have a phobia of scorpions, snakes, spiders, slugs, and insects (a few insects, e.g. ants and flies, are OK, but I hate most insects). What's a geographical location (preferably in the US) that satisfies that characteristic? I know some of you might say I'm being controlled by my phobia, and yes I am. But I want to enjoy life and I can't enjoy life with those things around. I fell into a well when I was little (yes, I know, Batman, whatever) and there were tons of slugs and insects and spiders down there and I've never recovered.
Now, the stuff I would actually have in the house. I don't like going far from my house, not because I mind heat/cold or exercise, but because I just really hate driving. So I'm planning a sort of athletic complex. This would consist of three things: a small pool, perhaps with a cheap waterslide for kids. I would want this to be indoor, because indoor pools are way better. A small indoor climbing wall (I love climbing), maybe 10 feet high and 20 feet across.. And, most importantly (I'm a serious runner) a short outdoor track. Maybe one of those 200m ones, either circling the house or just outside it, or, if it's a bigger house than I'm anticipating, attached to it. If it's outside, as it probably would be, a tent would be over it so that it doesn't get super cold or super hot.
Yes, I know this is all very complicated and probably expensive. Money's not really a huge object, but I just want ballpark figures. That's why I'm not going to an agent, this probably wouldn't materialize until several years from now, just getting ballpark figures.

Answer
OK, I'm up for your challenge. I live and CA and HI. HI does not have snakes [technically it has one that is more the size of a small worm but it is classified as a reptile], it does not have scorpions, very few insects, has a centipede, has a brown widow spider. It does have slugs. But all in all very few insects. CA does have rattlesnakes in certain areas but they are very shy, various assortment of brown recluse and black widow spiders, very few mosquito's, mild ant population in most places.

HI has a very mild climate so you can jog on your track although you won't need an indoor pool as the climate year round is so mild. Similarly coastal CA has a mild climate although the coastal breeze makes for some cool evenings and by my standards, cold winters where you want to heat your pool and maybe enclose it. Public schools in HI are not great so factor in private schools.

Not a lot of driving to do on the Big Island - it is an island for goodness sake. Every October there is an Ironman triathlon you can train for. The Big Island does have VOG, a volcanic gas that the trade winds scatter.

Both states can have earthquakes and the Big Island of Hawaii is one living and very active volcano.

Climbing walls can be put anywhere so that is very flexible.

But really, where are your friends and family and support group? If you have children and a spouse or partner you will want family to be accessible. In Hawaii you will either be isolated or you will need guest quarters to host family. Southern CA has a mild climate and better access for airlines unless your people can charter. I recommend San Diego coastal as relatively less crowded and very few insects which are easy to control with a pest service. Ditto pest service in HI. Land sufficient to host a track along coastal CA is pricey.

What rides are a must when you go to Disney World Florida? What hotels are offer excellent service?

kids disney tents on That will make your grand total $13 shipped!

Moose

I dont care about any other Disney theme parks, just the one in Orlando.

Answer
If you can afford it, the "A" hotels are truly dreamy -- great service and great views. Savannah view rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge let you see wildlife while enjoying breakfast in bed. The Polynesian is within walking distance of Magic Kingdom and the nightly fireworks are visible from the lake shore behind the hotel.

The "C" hotels are the lowest price, and get you all the perks and privileges of being a WDW guest, but I think it's a better value to pay a little more for a "B" hotel and have more amenities (like water slides and hot tubs, bigger rooms with fridge and microwave) OR bring my tent to Fort Wilderness and enjoy really low prices AND be able to set up a camp kitchen. (Disney food can be VERY expensive.) If you are bringing kids, there is more for them to amuse themselves with at Fort Wilderness (especially if you bring or rent bikes) so they're not underfoot in your hotel room all the time. Choose a hotel in your price range by location, something adjacent to the park you visit most often.

Best rides:
Animal Kingdom. Take the safari ride http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=KilimanjaroSafarisAttractionPage first because the animals are most active in the early morning unless it's an unusually chilly day. Then do the time travel dinosaur ride (forget the name) and Everest Expidition coaster. Make some time to see some of animal shows too. The bird show is especially amazing, with trained birds interacting with audience members and an after show opportunity to see the birds up close and ask questions of the handlers. AK restaurants are nothing special, mostly snack bars with astronomically priced 'bronto burgers & T-rex fries,' but the Rain Forest Cafe is delighful, if pricey. If there is RFC near your home, it will be identical except for lower prices and no Disney theme items in the gift shops.

Epcot. A great mix and match of things. My favorite is Ellen's Energy Adventure, a must for fans of Ellen Degeneres, Jeopardy, or Dinosaur animatronics http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=EllensEnergyAdventureAttractionPage. There are quite a few hi-tech interactive playrooms for kids; some kids could spend hours at this and others get bored quickly. The Epcot World Village area is an assortment of complexes within the park, each with a national theme such as Japan, Norway, France, or Morroco. Most have a gift shop with authentic items from the host nation, a restaurant or two serving the national cuisine, and some also have a ride or presentation about the host nation. There are usually dance and music troops giving sidewalk entertainment at each pavillion. On my last visit, I was trying to imitate and Irish dance step, and dancer stepped out to give me an improptu private lesson!
The Norway ride is really exciting (compared with the other pavillion attractions, that is) and the French Bakery serves a reasonably priced, delicious sandwish and desert with a small bottle of wine or 'sidewalk' dining. If dining and shopping are important to you, Epcot is your place. Make sure to take advantage of 'will call' for your purchases; pick the up at guest services as you leave the park or have them delivered to your (on campus) room. If The Living Seas restaurant is still serving, invest in at least one day of Disney Dining Plan to have dolphins, giant rays, and huge sea turtles swimming past your table. Make reservations way in advance to get 'aquarium side' seating.

My MGM favorites are http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=IndianaJonesEpicStuntSpectacularAttractionPage, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=TheDisneyMGMStudiosBacklotTourAttractionPage, which includes Catastrophe Canyon, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=TheGreatMovieRideAttractionPage, where the Wicked Witch of the West plunges you into a movie magic dimension that includes Wild West Gun Fights, Scarlette O'Hara's Tara, and other classic film scenes. http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/dining/diningDetail?id=PrimeTimeCafeDiningPage is a Fifties Diner with the world's freshest, snarkiest waitersses; be prepared for a lecture on finishing your vegetables! Toy Story Pizza Planet is favorite with children. It's been many years since my last visit to MGM, and there are a lot of new rides and shows I'm not familiar with.

Magic Kingdom. The first and still the best. This is where you'll find the iconic Cinderella Castle, Mad Teaparty (ride a whirling tea cup), and Flying Dumbos. http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=JungleCruiseAttractionPage, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=TheHauntedMansionAttractionPage, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=PiratesoftheCaribbeanAttractionPage, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=TheEnchantedTikiRoomUnderNewManagementAttractionPage, http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=CountryBearJamboreeAttractionPage, and http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw/parks/attractionDetail?id=BigThunderMountainRailroadAttractionPage sound like a lot to cram into one day, but you want to stay late to see the fireworks show anyways, right? MK has the best parades, real 'must see' shows with amazing special effects floats and "real live" Disney characters. It's an easy walk from MK to The Polynesian Resort, for relaxed poolside dining. (Visit the hotel convenience store for a box of crackers, pound of cheese, jug of a drink, and a few apples to create an picnic meal economy meal. You can also watch the MK fireworks from the lake shore behind The Polynesian.

Indulge in at least one Character Dining experience to get the best photo ops with Mickey. Since rides 'conveniently' disembark within gift shops, start training your family right now to don't touch, don't even look, just walk by. Those $8 Mickey shoe laces and $12 'ear' hats can add up in a hurry.

If you're spending more than 4-5 days at WDW, you might want to plan a relaxing afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon. Kids can slide and surf while adults veg in lounge chairs or float round and round the circular Lazy River. Last time I was there, we were permitted to bring in a small picnic with ice chest and igloo jug of screwdrivers. Relaxed parents indeed! Thank Goodness for the WDW transportation system.

Give WDW a call right now at Guest Information
(407) 939-6244. These agents are knowledgable and helpful, very active in suggesting you most economical option rather than (like some other major Orlando attaction that I won't name) constantly urgint you to upgrade and spend more. Skip the cost of Park Hopper, unless you want to visit another theme pard after Animal Kingdom, which closes early so the animals can sleep. Any one park has plenty to keep you amused all day long, and you want to spend in the park, not spending 60-90 minutes getting from one park to another. If someone in your party would enjoy (not need, just enjoy) a wheelchair, rent one off campus for a week for about the same price you'd by the day at WDW. It won't let you skip lines, but it will give you a cart to carry your stuff on and a handy place to give your feet a rest. Everyone should have a compact rain poncho and dry sox (quick drying synthetic, not cotton) as Florida rains are very sudden and very hard, but short.

Have fun and tell Pluto (my favorite) that I'll be seeing him in December.

Mommies---how was it taking your kid(s) to Disney for the day when they were a year and a half old?

April

Tell me your experience on your day at the Kingdom? Any helpful hints and/or suggestions for the little mousekeeters? We are planning to go just for the day this sum er as a pit stop from St Pete beach while we are vacationing from Indiana. I've always gone with older kids and/or adults.

Answer
We took our son when he was 9 1/2 months and again when he was almost 2 yr and found it to be very enjoyable. Some suggestions I have are to be sure to bring plenty of snacks for him, it can be hard to find something in the parks you'll want them to eat. We also tried hard to keep to his regular nap schedule. I brought a very light blanket and some clips (like clothespins), so you can tent over the stroller for nap time so there are no distractions. I personally wasn't interested in heading back to the resort for an hour nap. Try to find a spray bottle to keep him cool (I just found a non-battery operated one at Target in the "cheap" section-it's awesome). Also if you are going over a very hot time, consider tucking some freezer gel packs around him in the stroller. No point having a miserably hot baby that's crabby.

Wow cool. Well I have some thoughts.
Firstly, re; Music, you know Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears did albums based around the cirucus theme. So you could have like an intro song as the guests arrive. notably britneys track Circus as an intro, and then some of Christinas songs. Britneys one has the lyrics 'just like a circus' in so would be a good intro. perhaps play this on a loop or mix in a few other songs from the two albums to play for like half hour while the guests arrive .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVhJ_A8XUgc&ob=av2e It's a cool song very upbeat and atmospheric - personal taste obviously. but for the occasion i wuold go for this. it would set the circus tone.
then as this was happening hire maybe some entrance entertainment like circus acts, low grade ones a few ribbon artists greeting people, serving popcorn or throwing popcorn, offering up candy floss. the mood is set from the get go. basically get a good playlist and off the top of my head those two artists have done circus themed albums. get everyone to dress up of course. maybe hire a face painter. a nice one, to do classy, pretty paintings. like this. http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=619&tbm=isch&tbnid=jtexA5oUhz8j_M:&imgrefurl=http://www.oddzinends.com/face.html&docid=rJq03Y8ThqgQ_M&imgurl=http://www.oddzinends.com/gallery/mask_large.jpg&w=460&h=345&ei=bfE1T-npHIGt8QPnzrDDAg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=390&sig=113609535800585782523&page=1&tbnh=130&tbnw=163&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:0&tx=103&ty=72 kind of thing.
have an artist doing that for the kids or adults whoever the party is for. either is cool. sounds like a fu party.
maybe have a circus ring, like fashion one, not a real one! lol. no animals (ethics alert) but maybe some large cutouts of tigers. a very magestical animal, could be littered around the area. to add dreamatic effect. and your waiters could be dressed like ring masters http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&biw=1280&bih=619&tbm=isch&tbnid=Iue6JCgK8ZBAWM:&imgrefurl=http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/ring-master-adult-costume&docid=wGDXNeJ7fOKIzM&imgurl=http://cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/c/0/0/61/d/AAAADE1nIacAAAAAAGHRrA.jpg%253Fv%253D1249401572000&w=300&h=300&ei=q_I1T_XENYqs0QXn89GuAg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=244&sig=113609535800585782523&page=1&tbnh=118&tbnw=118&start=0&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:19,s:0&tx=55&ty=26
ive been to weddings where there was a colour specification for outfits, and that worked well, as long as we wore lilac it didnt matter what we wore, but we all matched the colour scheme of the hall hired out and still maintained our own choice of actual outfit. this isnt hard or costly. i bought a summer dress for £10 in lilac. perhaps the traditional circus colours of like red, black, maybe a bit of royal purple you could ask that guests wear a variation or one of these colours, this is easier than asking people to come in "costume" :D this will make your guests feel less pressurised and the whole thing will be more relaxed : ) Corsets are circussy too do you could just ask for corsets and tutus if they like.
if you have those machines this will add to the effect overall. and you can get music to play over all this like cirucs music all the way through, until you get to othe karaoke. heres a CD from Amazon obviously have circus themed crockery (paper) like you can get off amazon a big canape area for guests to convene for the karaoke perhaps, you can rent canapes, even a cheap one will add to the overall effect eonogh to make it totally memorable and effective. i mean circus tent here. something simiple and the kids can take a away a circus themed doggy bad - found these on amazon too :D http://www.amazon.co.uk/Party-Box-Circus-Theme-Design/dp/B000WNIQNI/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1328936669&sr=8-13
hope these ideas inspire. i think this is s great idea so the question inspired me. have fun : )

activities for kids...?

Chrissy

Hi Ya'll,
I babysit 3 girls ages 1, 3 and 5. Mainly it's the 3 & 5 year old for an 8 hour period and then the 1 yr old for 4 hours. They are really active (always going going going!) and I was trying to think of some activites for them to do while inside? Being outside is fine but there parents don't want them out for an excessive amount of time due to heat/sun so when they are inside I need something amusing to do for at least an hour or two at a time. Anyways, they usually don't sit still for movies very long but I did just buy playdoh, a coloring book, chalk (sidewalk), and a playdoh activity kit which I hope will keep them amused. Any other ideas...?

Thanks!!
~Sarah

PS The girls do have there own toys to play with, but they usually get bored within 10 min. (just aren't "cool" anymore) so please dont suggest that. It never works! haha. :o)

Answer
I love children.. I highly sujest getting a babysitting bag together. Most children are not interested in their toys because no one has really sat down with them and show them how to play with the toys.. Get your self on a schedule play time with them. Since you are the one person that is around them the most a schedule is the best. And they really respond to order..
Children at this age Love Love 3 and 5
Story Time (make different voices to fit characters)
Puppet Time
Dress Up
Make a tent out of the kitchen table or in living room..Or in the bedroom..
The five year old should really be into playing mommy and the three year old is just starting in this area. So playing house. Which leads to play time in the world of imagination..
Pretend Cooking, Baby care, cleaning, Rest rant, This activity will and can go on for hours and they like to play it almost daily.
Playdoh is a great activity I agree make sure to cover the floor if it is on carpet..Be ready to have the colors mixed. The three year old will love to mix the colors and the older one will want them kept separate. So maybe their very own play doe for play doe time. Stinging big beads on a shoe lace../Ball time play..each needs own ball and also together time. rolling it on the ground.learning to catch.. the five year old should like tossing the ball up in the air..
Five Year Olds:
Teach sack-walking and "twist-em," "statue," or "freeze" games to provide an outlet for their drive for physical activity.
Play games that can teach right and left directions, like "Hokey-Pokey," "Looby-Loo," and "Simon Says."
Ask 5-year-olds to tell you a story. Write it down and post it on the wall or refrigerator
Three Year Old
Play musical games such as "London Bridge," "Ring-around-the-Rosie," and "Farmer in the Dell. Also they love to jump and hop.. show them "how to hop like a rabbit, tiptoe like a bird, waddle like a duck, slither like a snake, and run like a deer.Box play and anything they can hide in.. Making silly faces..
One year old..
will love play doe too.. All will love bubbles..ball play too..called "Roll it to me"

Have Fun.. Hope this helps. ^^
