theme for kids party?

sissie

I'm planing to do a BDAY party for my son, I was thinking of doing spiderman theme.
So, how can I decorate the place, from candy bags to table decoration?
I will really appreciate the help ((:

Answer
The color theme for this party is red and black. Cover your table with a white sheet for easy cleaning. Then run some red and black streamers down the center of the table. Make a centerpiece with a Spiderman toy, the birthday cake, or a bouquet of balloons placed inside a Spiderman gift bag. Scatter some toy spiders around the table. Add matching plates, napkins and cups. Hang a few Spiderman posters, balloons and matching streamers. For a fun effect use black streamers to create a web hanging from your ceiling.

You can also make fun "spider treats"...one way is to melt chocolate and add chow mein noodles and remove using 2 forks to grab the clump...add 2 mini M&M's for eyes and let dry on wax paper or foil.

Another way is to use Oreo cookies: add pieces of cut skinny licorice for legs on each side poked into cookie cream...."paste" 2 Mini M&M's for eyes on with frosting.

I'm sure there must be gift bags in Spiderman theme at party goods store. Fill with tattoos, candies, a toy like a mini Slinky--hand out coloring books of Spiderman or whatever you can find in the stores. As the big treat, guest gets a Spiderman book or a Spiderman tooth brush. Each bag has Spiderman fruit snacks, Spiderman Cheese Snacks, Spiderman stickers, Spiderman fruit roll-ups, and a Spiderman CD filled with Spidey songs....are some ideas.

A Spiderman Pinata is another idea for activity to do.

Play a Spidey Game:

Spiderman Web Walk
To Make: On black construction paper draw webs with Elmers Glue. Then sprinkle glitter on the webs. Let the webs dry. Once they have dried, cut off the excess black area. Laminate the webs. Tape bad characters on all the webs, except one. Place spiderman on one of the webs.

How to play:
Each player stands on web. music begins and all players walk on the web. When the music stops, draw a character. Person standing on that character must sit down. Keep playing till all characters have been drawn. The last person standing will be standing on Spiderman and is the winner. Play again!

As an activity: Buy some cheap shower curtains from dollar store...have kids decorate them as capes to wear during the party....Have children decorate a mask to make their own superhero mask. Use stickers, stamps, crayons, and markers.

Spiderman Catch a Bad Guy Relay
Split players into two teams. Each player must put on the cape, go through the spider cave (tunnel), shoot a bad guy with silly string, and into the Spiderhut (a pop-up Spiderman tent). Each tent has pictures of bad guys in it. Each player must grab a bad guy, go back through the spidercave, and then take off the cape and give it to the next person. Repeat till each team member has had a turn.

Another game idea: 1.) Play Sandman, Sandman - He or she sits in a chair with their back to the group. A Spiderman doll or picture is placed under the chosen personâs chair. Then everyone would sing: Sandman, Sandman where has Spiderman gone? Somebody's saved him and he has swung home. Then Sandman has three chances to guess who took Spiderman. If Sandman guesses right then he gets to do it again. If Sandman guesses wrong than the person who had Spiderman gets a turn as the sandman.

Get a poster from Walmart...cut out Spiderman and attach to sturdy cardstock to post on mailbox so guests know where party is.

Im babysitting! KID GETS BORD EASY!?

lexa

im babysitting a kid and she is 8 and almost 9. i take her to the pool every nice day but i want to know some new things to do. we do fun stuff but after this whole summer the games we play together to pass time get old. what are some fresh new ideas for outside on sunny days. but most importantly fun things to do on stormy and windy days!!!

P.S. please dont say take her to the pool, ialready inderstand that. also think of activities for the state of ohio.

Answer
I've worked with kids for a while. Here are some ideas that kids like.

1. Make bird feeders to hang outside. Coat a pine cone with peanut butter, roll in birdseed, and hang from a tree. Birds love them, and it's a good way to spend an hour.

2. Make a mini-golf course to use inside. Use plastic cups for holes, paper towel tubes for tunnels, and a box and pinwheel for a windmill. Better yet, have her help you make it and let her decorate the setup. You can buy toy clubs and balls at any store.

3. Scrapbooking. Get the kid a disposable camera and let her take pictures about her life or on a trip with you. Then, you and she can crop and put together pages and make her very own scrapbook.

4. If you're near a zoo, go to the zoo. Kids love animals! Again, take a camera and let her take her own pictures.

5. Teach her card games like Go Fish or 500. Try clock solitaire. Get a book of card tricks from the library and work on them together.

6. While we're on the subject...LIBRARY! Never underestimate the power of the library! She can browse the kids' books, some libraries have computer games for kids to play, sections with toys, and most places I know have videos and DVDs for you to check out.

7. Living History museum. If there's one in your area, then ten to one she'll love it. You get to dress as a person from the time period the museum is about, try little projects, and make souvenirs.

8. Paper Dolls. There are printables available on the internet, and all you have to do is glue them to card stock, give her the clothes to color, cut them out, and you have paper dolls. Or, you can make your own from magazines.

9. Make a castle. Drape a sheet or two over a table after moving the chairs away, and you have a castle/fort/hideaway/tent, etc. You can "camp out" and have a lunch in your tent or a feast in your castle. Take the fun even further and dress up as princesses with crowns and dresses and jewelry.

10. Print coloring pages from the internet. They beat coloring books hands down, and even more fun for the kid is to let her choose her own.

Basically, all you have to do is use your imagination. Be creative. Good luck.

Answer
Dancing is good. Also have them try different activities following you like jumping, standing on one foot, turning around, putting hands in air. Act like different animals.
Finger paint on large sheets of paper, or use shaving cream to paint the table. (Watch to make sure they don't eat it.)
Stack blocks. Play with cars. Play with a beach ball. Make a tent using a table and climb in it, or find a large box to play in.
Make musical instruments using empty plastic bottles with rice or dry beans.
Read. Teach them short rhymes and finger plays.
Hopefully you have a fenced in area to let them play outside.

Great Campground for adults and kids?

LeoShines

Camp Site Recommendations? Looking for a lake or close to water, prefer lush forest setting, but would be open to something different if it's just awesome! Need showers. But will bring tents. And preferably where campsites aren't right on top of each other.... we like hiking, room for football and games, maybe fishing too? Not too highly priced, and within about 2 hours of Sonoma (SF bayarea) Ideas?

Answer
There happens to be a campsite 10 miles south of Livermore that is pretty much exactly what you described.
Del Valle Regional Park is right by a beautiful (squeaky-clean :D) lake with picnic tables, lifeguard-monitored beaches, and boats for rent. You can fish in the lake for trout, catfish, and bass (but you need a permit, which you can purchase there, and a fishing license). There's a big grassy field by the lake where you can play football, soccer...just about anything; and Del Valle is also surrounded by thousands of acres of forested hiking trails. Since it is a regional park, it is inexpensive, too, with camping prices per night (first car parks free, second car is an additional $6) only $28 (not counting boat rentals or fishing permits)!
When we went, our campsite had plenty of room for playing football; I've heard campsites in the #50s are good for this. There are free showers there, though my friend went and said that her shower was dirty and she didn't want to use it. My experience with the showers there was fine, however. Go in the summer during the week; there are always weekend crowds and in the winter it is muddy and wet.
I think you would really like Del Valle: check out the websites below for more information.

Good luck!

Games to play out side with 2 school aged kids?

Linda Lou

I am now babysitting a 1st and 4th grader for a few hours after school. today was my first day and I had the 1st grader go down the slide head first smash into a wall and bleed everywhere decided a playground/swingset in the backyard is prlly better to just look at lol

any ideas that I can do with them?

Answer
tag.
hide and seek.
board games (*checkers,charades,tick tack toe,connect 4.)

Never leave the kids alone. They might draw on walls or get into something they shouldn't be in. Keep them occupied and bring lots of fun games.Don't ever leave the child alone. They will pour soap down the potty and make bubbles.
Make a Fun Bag. In the fun bag you could have candy (if they are allowed), movies, coloring pages, stickers, books, games, and crafts, as well as various things for you when the kids go to sleep. The things in the Fun bag should consider the age of the children you are babysitting, as very young children will appreciate different things to older children.
When the kids start to get fussy or antsy, ask them if they want to color / do a project / play a game. They say yes and, voila! Fun bag!
Play with the children. They won't like it if you don't play. So, take out the thing they want to do. If you are doing a project or coloring and you have messy toddlers, let them help put down newspaper or a plastic mat to protect floors and tables. Have fun and they will be able to tell and enjoy your presence more.
For projects; when making things if you can make it edible it's good. Some finger painting recipies are edible. (Vanilla yogurt with food coloring)
Little kids also love doing things for themselves. Let them pour or stir their own drinks, make their own peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or help you make cookies. It helps pass the time while teaching them skills, and they will feel more involved and grown up instead of you taking over everything.
Put a chair by the sink for the kids to stand on, and let them help you wash the dishes. (Take out sharp objects like forks hiding in the suds so they don't get poked accidentally.) Being allowed to help you wash the dishes can be a reward for young children.
Be patient with the children if they start getting bored or miserable, show them the things they have brought and encourage them to play. If they don't want to do something in particular, find something else for them to do!
Take them outside! Ride bikes, go to the park, walk the dog, anything outdoors will run their energy out! Make sure to be very careful because the outdoors also has many hazards.
Play fun age appropriate games. Don't do something that is to old for the kids because you want parents to want you to come back. Also, when playing with the child, be sure to not be rough with them especially when you have a younger age group. This may turn them off and somebody could get hurt.
Make or buy play-dough. If you have a recipe that doesn't involve cooking on the stove, you can have the kids help make it. If you don't have the materials needed for play-dough, you can make something called Ooblek with simply water and cornstarch. This is especially good because it doesn't involve dangerous, hot ovens or sharp objects. Do this outside of course, as it is extremely messy, but that's the fun of it!
Pick a movie appropriate for the age group you're babysitting. Pop some popcorn and put the popcorn in individual bowls for each child (if they are young). Give each child a ticket awhile before the movie. Be the ticket-taker at the door to the room, and give each child a bowl of popcorn. Then turn off the lights and start the movie!
Make a tent! Use chairs and big blankets. Fill the inside with pillows and blankets. After it's made, you can tell (or read!) stories. If it's possible, make it over a TV, so the TV is inside, and you have a movie theater! If the children are 4 or older (and less likely to make a mess), pop some popcorn to get the great movie atmosphere!
Remember, toddlers love anything that keeps them active. If everyone's bored, take out some scarves, turn on the music, and dance! If you have a lot of children, play freeze tag, or a team game where EVERYONE needs to be involved. For most kids under the age of 5, hide and seek may have some hazards.
They might run and hide to far, not come out of their hiding spot and you may not be able to find them.

[edit] TipsMany things that adults think of as drudgery is fun for young children. Find ways to let them help you and make them feel important. Thank them for helping.
Play with the children. They'll like it when you get involved and will ask for you as their babysitter. Neither parents nor kids like lazy babysitters who stay on the phone all day.
Don't make a mess. Leave the house as clean or cleaner than you found it.
Always clean up after an activity. But don't do it alone. Have the kids help, too. You can sing this song: "Clean up, clean up. Everybody do their share. Clean up, clean up. Everybody, everywhere," You can make up your own melody.
Don't just sit down and watch a movie. Keep the kids active. If it is a nice day, go outside play with a ball or your dog or your trampoline.
If it is dark encourage NOT to go outside =)
Also try to play games that are educational but still fun
Clean up

A rainy weekend with 2 kids?

AprilSS

I need some ideas on what to do with my 7 year old daughter and my 4 year old stepson this weekend. It's supposed to be storming all weekend and they will be bored and driving us nuts if we don't get them out of the house and do something fun.

We don't have lots of money and it's hard to find stuff that they're both interested in. Any ideas?
Oh, and I live in the St. Louis area

Answer
Libraries can be fun for the right kids - my older two could spend hours there.

Check the local paper - many high schools do performances this time of year and the cost is usually just a few dollars.

Go to the mall to just walk around or have a snack.

Visit a local pet center like PetsMart - my kids love the fish tanks there!

Have a lunch picnic on the floor of a living room, bedroom or somewhere they don't usually eat. Spread out a blanket, pack the lunch, the works.

Make a tent by draping blankets over the dining or kitchen table. Let them use their imagination.

Get some empty boxes, all sizes and let them decorate and use them any way they wish. My kids will ask us to cut doors in them to make 'cars' for their stuffed animals or if they are big, for themselves!

Make a scavenger hunt in the house with prizes.

Bake cookies (always a hit)

What would be some good things for an Easter Party I am setting up for extended family?

kids tent over table on this looks totally doable, found via One Pretty Thing
kids tent over table image

Adamismyna

I am hosting one this year and I am 28, single. It will be kids but only 1 little kid (Easter Bunny aged) the rest are junior high and high school. Some will come and others might not but I wanted to make enjoyable activities.

Answer
List of things to do for an Easter Party

Mummy: Need rolls of toilet paper, one per person. You can form teams to see who is the fastest dressing their mummy (other person) or just let them have fun. This can be very messy with the dust from the toilet paper and the paper fight afterwards.

Picky Marshmallow Relay: Need toothpicks, one per child and one marshmallow per team. The marshmallow is placed on the end of the first persons toothpick. They hold the toothpick in their mouth and try to pass it to the next person in line using only the toothpicks in their mouths.

Clothes Pin 7-Ups: 7 clothes pins per person. Clip clothes pins on the backs of all players and have them face each other in a circle (outside). At the mention of "GO" they each run around trying to get the clothes pins off each others backs. No grabbing and holding on to the other persons.

Talent Show: Video the kids performing to music. Lip sync is fun or air guitar/sax etc.

Nighttime Easter Egg Hunt: Hide eggs and prizes outside. Everyone brings a flashlight to the party. Hide items like fingernail polish, body mists, not just candy.

Piggly-Wiggly: Everyone lays out their sleeping bags. Choose someone to be "it." They must leave the room. Everyone else hides inside the sleeping bags (not their own). When they are ready, "it" comes back in. She sits on one of the sleeping bags and says, "Piggly-Wiggly" the person inside says "oink, oink." 'It' must guess who is inside the bag. If they are right, the person in the bag is it.

Rock and Roll: When your having a slumber party and going to a roller-skating rink is out of the question, make a skating rink in the garage. Parents can back out their cars and take out other stuff in the way so there is room to skate. You can also have music and a snack bar!

Hip hats: Decorate denim hats with jewels and sparkle puff paints and wear them around the next day.

Puffy pillows: Decorate plain white pillowcases with puffy paint. Let them dry overnight.

Popcorn Toppin': Pop some plain popcorn. Give everybody a couple of dishes with popcorn in them. Have your guests put on all the toppings you want. For example, cinnamon and sugar, raisins, melted butter, pizza seasoning, and parmesan cheese to make a pizza kind o' popcorn.

Curly-Cute: Make rag curls in your friends' hair. Take pieces of fabric and wrap hair around them. When you wake up you hair will be all curly.

We Had A Ball: At the end of the slumber party, sit in a circle and sign beach balls with a waterproof marker. Write all about the good times you had together at the sleepover.

Burglar Alarm: Set a little timer and have everyone go out of the room. One person stays in and hides the timer. Then the other children come back in and try to find the timer before it goes off. Whoever finds it might get some kind of prize.

Set up a craft table to make bracelets.

Have a pajamas contest! See who has the best pajamas!

Watch some fun movies.

Pillow fights.

Make smores!!!!!!!!!!
Serve whipped cream and fruit on waffles in the morning.
See if you can borrow a kareoke machine so you can sing along to music.

Do makeovers!

Make rice krispie treats.

Make your own sundae!

Popcorn fights, if you have a vacuum handy.

Decorate some cutie pie cupcakes.

Play boardgames.

Decorate pillowcases with fabric markers...this way they can use them that night. Put on date, etc.

Shaving cream fight out side.

Play telephone.

Have a talent show!

Wacky fashion show!

Have a "theme" for the slumber party such as spa slumber party (perfect for all girls), spooky slumber party, survival slumber party, etc.

Do pedicures.

Think of unusual places to sleep: the attic, a tree house, a tent outside in your back yard.
Scavenger hunts.

How do you make a homemade teepee for the living room?

mrscjsimon

I'm having difficulty finding info online on how to make a teepee for the living room, like you would a tent using sheets and chairs. I'm sure there is a way to make is quickly and simply using objects around the house, and I finally found something in a search online, but then it said "page not found". I have a few days to do this. Thanks.

Answer
http://www.shelterpub.com/_shelter/www_teepee.html

The major problem with your request is that chairs are not conducive to tipi shapes -- you need some poles.

But generally speaking, kids are well entertained with sheets or blankets draped over anything into a tent shape. Many an afternoon has been spent under a sheet-draped card table...

What are the best RV campgrounds in Central Florida to bring small children to?

kids tent over table on Also when would visit the grandparents for holidays there were not ...
kids tent over table image

Beachy Kee

My husband and I recently got an RV and have been taking our 2 small boys camping for about the past year. What are the best campgrounds that are the most kid friendly. We have 1 year old and 3 year old boys.

Answer
If I could I would stay at the Disney Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. You can stay there and enjoy all the ammenities of a Disney resort without even having to pay to go to the parks. There is a pool, horseback riding, tennis, archery, crusing on the Disney lakes, petting zoo, playgrounds and so much more. Be sure to click the link on the sources section, for much more detailed info from www.allears.net.

Here's a little more info:
There are 788 conventional campsites at FW located in 20 loops (100 through 2000). Most sites are fairly secluded from one another by a generous growth of brush and trees between sites. All campsites are back-ins and are a combination of paved driveway, which range in length from 25 to 60 feet, and sandy pad. Each site is approximately 25 feet wide and comes with a picnic table and charcoal grill. All sites have electricity (20/30/50 amps) and city water. There are 695 full hookup sites that also provide sewer. The 90 partial hookup sites, primarily used by tent campers and those with tent trailers, are located on loops 1500 and 2000.

It used to be that you couldn't have a campfire at the sites, because they worried about people letting them get out of control etc. But! this policy changed.

You can bring in your own contained campfire unit. Typically, stores call them firepits or outdoor fireplaces. It's a solid metal bottom on short legs with metal mesh sides and a top. A mesh top is okay at all campsites EXCEPT any of those that are creekside. If you have a creekside spot, you must have a solid metal top for your firepit. This is to better prevent embers from spreading to the greater amount trees and foliage (and wildlife) that are around the creeks. For example, the creek/dog walk along Loop 300 has a large wooded area with deer, eagles, armadillos and more making their home there.

Of course, Fort Wilderness also has the Campfire Program where you can enjoy campfires as well as everything offered at this special program.

I'm babysitting my 8 year old boy cousin and I know nothing about kids. Things to do?

Me

I'm 25 and literally never spent any time with kids. I don't even know what to expect out of an 8 year old and I've only met him twice. Anyone got any tips or ideas for building rapport with him beyond just putting him in front of the TV?

Answer
Ask him what he'd like to do.
He will looove the idea that you will play any game he picks out.
Especially the ones his parents don't usually play with him.

Take him outside, and play.
Just act goofy.

Make up a silly game

Bring some playdough!
Sit and play with it too, he'll like that

Make a tent or fort out of blankets/sheets.
Or just under that table
It can be a clubhouse just for you and him
Then you two can play some boardgames in your new clubhouse=)

8 year olds aren't hard to please.
He will be up for anything
As long as you are fun and outgoing, and willing to play he will have a blast!

I've started budgeting for Christmas and I need to decide what kind of toy to get both my kids for them to share. (They will each get their own toys, and one expensive one to share.) They end up sharing most of each other's toys anyways, so I don't see the point of buying them each an expensive toy when they have fun together. My son is 4, and my daughter is 2. Anyone have any good suggestions for toys that kids can play with at the same time?

Can you help me create a carnival themed birthday cake?

Abby M

I am looking to create a birthday cake for my daughter's 3rd birthday. We're going all out and doing a carnival themed birthday party with a tent, petting zoo, games, etc. I'm not really interested in buying a cake, I'd rather make it myself. The only problem I'm having is that I can't seem to really find any good ideas. I did see one for a popcorn box but it looked "sloppy". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Carnival Party

A carnival themed party can be lots of fun for both the parents planning the party and the kids who are lucky enough to attend. With carnival style games as the entertainment and the prizes as the favors this party is sure to be a hit. A little imagination and some store bought supplies makes it easier than it sounds.

Invitation
On your computer you can print out a large ticket for "admission" into the birthday bash or if you can find popcorn bags at a restaurant supply store print the information on a card and place in the bag. There are also really cute store bought clown invitations you can purchase at party supply stores that will fit with the theme.

Decorations
Balloons in primary colors tied everywhere. If you have a good artist in the family have them draw up some carnival type posters onto poster board and hang throughout the back yard. A large canopy tent for the presents, cake, eating area can be set up to look like a big top and decorated with streamers.

Food
Serve all of your food at once or have a booth set up as a concession stand. The age of the children might be a deciding factor on this one, younger children might not take time out to eat unless they are instructed. Some suggestions for carnival style food are popcorn, hot dogs, corn dogs, ice cream bars, cotton candy (you can buy it already made), and for the cake you may want to decide to do cupcakes on this one (it will save serving time, you'll be busy with so many other areas of the party).

Games
Set up carnival style booths by using card tables, large boxes, plywood, sheets or any prop you may have to set up your games. Three or four games will be good you will need to have an adult or teenage child to work each booth. You can either make up tickets to play each game once or buy a roll of tickets to hand out a bunch of tickets and let them play for a certain time limit. If you've ever been to a carnival you probably already have some ideas in your head about the types of games you can play. In case you need some help here are a few to get you going. You can give small prizes at the booths such as stickers, candy, rings, etc. or have them win tickets to redeem prizes.

Ring Toss: Buy some plastic rings at a toy store and place some plastic soda bottles filled with water or you can have them unopened and drink them later.
Set them up in your "booth" and let the game begin.
Go Fish: You can buy a toy fishing set or make your own with a stick and some string. Tie a magnet to the string, make paper fish out of construction paper and clip a paper clip on the end. Using color-coded fish the player wins the prize that corresponds with the color of fish they caught.

Ball Throw: Use a TV tray or some other small surface to make a small pyramid out of aluminum cans, for older kids you can use something a little heavier. Use a lightweight ball to have the players knock the cans off of the surface.

Bean Bag Toss: Use a piece of cardboard and cut holes large enough for a beanbag to go through, larger for younger children. You can draw a funny face and use the mouth as a hole or have several holes on the board. The object of the game is to get the beanbag through the hole. You can use a chair or stepladder to support the cardboard.

Pick a Pop: Get a half of a Styrofoam sphere and a bag of lollipops. Color with a marker a few of the bottoms of the lollipops. Stick the lollipops into the sphere so you can?t see the colored marking, the guests pick a pop and if it has a color they win a special prize if it?s just plain they win the lollipop.

Activities
Along with the game booths you can also set up some other fun activity booths such as face painting, a tattoo booth (with removable tattoos of course), a finger painting table, and a photo booth (cut a hole for the face on plywood or thick cardboard and draw a funny body, take a Polaroid to give as a party favor). If you have a larger budget you can actually hire some entertainment like a clown or magician.

Party Favors
The prizes for the games become your party favors, make sure everyone gets to take home a prize by giving out something at each both (redemption ticket or small token prize). You can also give out pre-packaged cotton candy or animal crackers as part of their favor. A great place to find carnival favors and supplies is Oriental Trading Company, Inc.
