Can I put a tent in the washer and dryer on the lowest settings?

Joe and Ki

Me my husband with the kids went camping a few weeks back but to our surprise we got rain when we got home we waited for a nice day and set the tent up outside in the back yard well of course it rained again and we got some winds that knocked over the tent weve been reseeting it up everyday but now cause of the winds we got got 1 split pole and 1 pole slightly bent I dont want to put the tent away wet so I was just wondering if I used the lowest setting can I put it through the washer and dryer

Answer
I put my nylon tent through the washer and the dryer. A few words of caution. One make certain that you use the setting for the largest load and the most delicate wash cycle. I put mine on the soak cycle for a few hours with Borax and detergent first. Borax eliminates odors and mine really stunk. Then, watch it carefully during the spin cycle. Mine had mosquito netting that I did not secure to the tent with a zipper and it tore during the spin cycle. Also, I added a waterproofer (available at the camping stores, some discounters and outfitters) to the rinse cycle to keep the tent from soaking through when used during a rain.

Finally, I put a few tennis balls in the dryer with the tent, no fabric softener and let her rip on the delicate/air dry cyle. I checked it often because it bunched up and had to be adjusted in both the washer and dryer.

Do you teach your kid/s not to kill bugs?

jen

If a bug gets in the house, do you kill it or take it outside?
Oh and the original question was more about bugs outside.

Answer
If i see a spider in my house---it has to die!!! Other things i can take outside, but a spider must die and usually by my husband as i can feel them crawling all over me if i am within 5 ft of it.

I dont really ever kill any bugs outside, spiders only if they get in our tent when camping.

What are some random things to do outside?

I always go outside but there's practically nothing to do. Sure, I can bike or skateboard... but that stuff gets boring after a while. I don't have any forest around my house, so that's out of the question. Please, I need at least something to do outside since y parents make me go out so much. Also, there's only one practical rural thing outside that may give you ideas, and that's the 5 pine trees in my backyard.

Answer
I was constantly forced to go outside as a kid, and I plan on making my children do it as well when I have them.

1. Go for walks
2. Make "nature mobiles" with things that you find around your neighborhood and hang them from the trees.
3. Bury a time capsule
4. Start a garden (vegetable or flower)
5. Stare at the clouds.
6. Build a tree house or fort
7. Find some friends and play bocce, can jam, frisbee, or whatever you want.
8. Build a swing off one of the trees with some rope and a piece of wood.
9. Find a dog/cat/rabbit/pet turtle and take it outside.
10. Meditate. Find your inner you.
11. Take photographs of your neighborhood.
12. Think about geo-caching.
13. Build some bird houses out of wood or recycled materials and put them up in the trees.
14. Write poems that are inspired by completely mundane things in your yard (ode to a puddle)
15. Lay out a blanket on the lawn and read in the sun.
16. Draw with chalk on the sidewalk or driveway or patio.
17. Set up a treasure hunt. Leave clues around the neighborhood.
18. Buy some bubble solution or make your own out of dishwashing liquid and water. Blow bubbles.
19. Fly a Kite
20. Fly a paper airplane
21. See if your parents can get a chimnea, so you can roast marshmallows!
22. Build a hammock
23. Make a tent. Camp out in it.
24. Try to make a solar oven, and cook something. Force a family member to eat it (hot dogs work well.)
25. If all else fails force your parents to come outside and play with you. That'll teach them.

What kind fun indoor activities can I do with my kids?

My son is 4 1/2 and my daughter just turned 3. Sometimes we can't get outside. We're looking to cure the boredom!
Please don't suggest tv or movies because I want to do something to keep them active.

Answer
Oh, do the same things the kids would do in preschool:

Art and crafts. - have them make puppets to go along with a story.
Allow them to make up a story to ago along with the puppets.
Make sun catchers. - clear contact paper and tissue paper is all that is needed.
Make a necklace out of noddles - yarn and noddles are all you need. You can paint the noddles.

Finger painting, painting with a paint brush, painting with pine cones, painting with acorns (You'll need a piece of paper, a large zip loc food container. - cut the paper to fit inside the container then drop in some paint and acorns, and let the kids shake. - be sure to put the lid on.)
Painting with a leaf.
Paint with a old toy car (wheels). push the car along a piece of paper after dipping the wheels in paint.
paint with anything you can put dip in paint.

Read a book and then have the kids act it out.

Play dress-up.

Build a farm with blocks, get animals from another toy to use.

Make a tent out of a table.

Read books

pretend to be airplanes.

Spin in circles until you are dizzy.

Call out animals for your children to "act like" - You call out "dog" and your kids get on all fours and bark.

Play Simon says

Play Ring around the Roses.)

Turn a box into something. - A house, a car, etc...color, paint, use stickers, to decorate.

Be SILLY!
