camping first time need help please?

LAP

HI

we are going camping for the first time. Me my boyfriend and our daughter. I am looking for a really nice tent that can fit at least 5 or so as i do not want a small one that just fits three. Also need to find some decent sleeping bags to. Me and my boyfriend are both 5"2 and our daughter who is 3 is almost 37 inches. Also are their airbeds you can get that does not need to be plugged into an electric outlet as is their another way to blow it up with out needing an electric outlet is what trying to ask. Also do tents have the zipper open on both sides or just one guessing both as you got to be able to open it well u are in the tent and when you are not in the tent. As my daughter is three I would like to but a lock on the ten so that nobody can break in it at night even know it just as easy to cut it with a knife i think. Also anything else can think of as never gone camping before like i said thanks so much.
want more then four person as plan on having more kids later on and cause daughter loves out door will be planning on camping alot more often. Also need a bigger one as we going as a big group and all sharing tents with others well just a few sharing it want it with like two rooms to so all not sleeping right next to each other. I have been looking but what are some good nice brands that have very goo quality thanks.
Only reason why I want to but a lock on the inside of the tent at night is cause my daughter who is three is very adventurous and I do not want her waking up in the middle of the night and unzipping the tent and leave the camp ground. she only turned three in January but she know how to do her own zipper on her jacket and what not so with her i do not trust to leave it open when we are all sleeping. me and my boyfriend are deep sleepers so if she got up and opened the tent we would not know it to we got up the next day. That only reason why i would like to have a tent as not really concern of somebody breaking into tent as they can do that even with a lock on as can cut the screens or what not.

Family size tents - We're a family of 5 and we use the REI Kingdom 8. There is a smaller Kingdom 6 that would probably work for you but the 8 is extremely roomy and very versatile in setup options. It doesn't have lock for the door but does have an add-on vestibule that provides another layer of security. The thing we like most is the privacy divider that allows you to essentially split the tent into two private rooms. We love ours!

For casual family camping there are a number of options in the sleeping bag department and it's best to just go to your local outdoor retailer to find the best fit. For a basic adult bag you should expect to pay between $80-$150. My wife and I use the Coleman Exponent that's rated down to zero degree (She and I do backpacking trips from time to time). Great bags and not too outrageous on price. For the kids (all under age 7), we have them in kid's Lafuma bags (64" and 40 degrees).

For sleeping pads, I'd recommend looking at a self-inflating Therm-a-Rest. This way you don't have to worry about pumps, etc. I will warn you that most of these don't completely inflate on their own. You do have to fully inflate them on lung power but it's usually a minimal effort.

Camping as a family as been one of the more rewarding things that we've been able to do together as a family. Definitely worth the investment.

Happy Camping!

The best campsites are by the Merced river. If you have kids, you just sit outside your tent and watch them play in the water. Look up and you'll see the granite walls of the valley and the sun.

I like Lower Pines Site that are right in Yosemite valley. However, the riverside campsite are booked 5 months in advance, but if you wait till the 15th of this month, you can book a site for travel in 5 months. To book online, go to http://www.recreation.gov/. It allows you to pick the paricular campsite. My favorite is either #60 on Lower Pines by the river if you like it more shady or #41 if you like the sun. The sites are not too close to each other and will fit 2 tents. There are flush toilets nearby but no showers. But if you walk down the back of the campground and past a huge meadow, you're 5 minutes from the showers in Curry Village.

If the campsites in Lower or Upper Pines are taken, try Wawona Campground. Again, there are sites that are right by the river. Again, if those are taken, I recommend Housekeeping Camp. Those are not for tents and more expensive (80/night). You get a quasi-tent cabin. Unlike the ones at Curry Village where you can't cook, you have a fire ring, electric outlets, shared bathrooms and bear lockers right nearby. You can cook and be right by the Merced River with breathtaking views of Yosemite Falls right outside your door. Under no circumstances book the tent cabins in Curry Village. You can't cook there and have to travel 100 yards back and forth to the bear lockers to store toothpaste, etc.

To summarize -- best bet if you're willing to go online at 7am (PST) on the 15th of the month 5 months in advance, you can snare a primo spot on Lower Pines right by the Merced River. But if you're going at the last minute but still want to have a camping experience, try Housekeeping Camp (River Units). Reservations for Housekeeping camp is at http://www.yosemiteparks.com.
